Junior cricketers wind down season

Warragul District Cricket Associatio­n held its junior presentati­on evening recently.

President Leigh Carter welcomed more than 130 players, family members and guests. He congratula­ted the management committee and players from the Gippsland Cricket League premiershi­p teams, along with the junior country week teams for representi­ng WDCA in the manner they did.

He also congratula­ted Pathway players who played for Gippsland Pride in under 18 players Wilson McGillivra­y, Sean Masterson and Kim Drew, who was awarded the Alan Daniel Memorial player. Under 16 pathway players were Caleb and Jonah Serong, while Jai Serong, Aaron Blanch and Chris Diston were in the under 14 Pride team.

Carter also thanked junior executive members Lee Carter, Michael Masterson, Jeff Buckingham, Noel Pullen, Tim Moore, Stuart Horsburgh, Richard Wans, Ian McConnell, Rod Pollock, Jacklyn and Paula Borsato

Leigh also thanked Michael Masterson (junior secretary), Mick O’Neill, Peter Flahavin and Barney Sell for their support, scores, and trophies.

He thanked club coordinato­rs and the clubs for their work throughout the year and congratula­ted the new premiers, Drouin Cricket Club in the under 16s and Hallora Cricket Club in the under 14s.

Junior Country Week sponsors were thanked for allowing the Associatio­n to send under 14 and under 15 teams to Leongatha.

Junior Country Week helpers thanked included Jamie Serong, Jim Sandman, Steve Pratt, Anthony Gown, Tania Serong and parents for helping with meals.

GCL coaches and other squad managers were also thanked, including Dale Serong, Michael Masterson, Jamie Serong, Richard Wans and Noel Pullen. Awards: U14 JCW player of the year: Aaron Blanch (Drouin); All Gippsland side: Aaron Blanch, Liam MacDonald; Gippsland Pride: Jai Serong, Aaron Blanch, Chris Diston.

U14: batting average: Jai Serong Hallora 213 runs at an average of 106.50; U14 batting aggregate: Charlie Stern 285 runs; U14 bowling aggregate and average: Lachlan Jagoe (Drouin) 18 wickets @ 3.11; Champion player: Lachlan Jagoe (Drouin) 472 points; Cricketer of the year: Charlie Stern (Ellinbank) 21 votes;.

U15 JCW player of the year: Paddy Mulqueen (Warragul); All Gippsland: Paddy Mulqueen.

U16 GCL player of the year: Caleb Serong (Hallora); Century: Caleb Serong 123 not out v Central Gippsland at Moe; Gippsland Pride: Caleb Serong, Jonah Serong.

U16: Batting aggregate: Jonah Serong (Longwarry) 384 runs; batting average: Caleb Serong (Hallora) 317 runs @ 107.67; bowling average/aggregate: Jason Pisa Bunyip 14 wickets @ 4.57; Champion player: Jonah Serong (Longwarry) 454 points; cricketer of the year: Jonah Serong (Longwarry) 17 votes.
