New name for Longwarry park
Bennet St Park in Longwarry will be renamed Longwarry Memorial Park, recognising the park as the home of the town’s cenotaph.
The Longwarry RSL sub branch wrote to council proposing the name change.
Officers said during the Anzac centenary period (2014–18), the state government was conducting a commemorative naming project.
he project is an opportunity for communities to acknowledge the wartime service and sacrifice of their local municipality’s military service people or locals who supported Australia’s military cause.
Cr Keith Cook said the Longwarry cenotaph was first unveiled in Princes Ave in 1919.
But, he said as traffic increased, the cenotaph needed to be loved to a more appropriate location.
The cenotaph was relocated to near the public hall.
“In both these locations it never had a surrounding area that was central and safe. So the cenotaph was moved again to a prominent location in an attractive space,” he said.
Cr Jessica O’Donnell said renaming the park was a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the wartime service and sacrifice of those who had served at wars.
She said it was great timing to have the park renamed just before Anzac day.
Officers said when council received a naming request, the proposal was validated against the naming rules.
Council officers concluded the proposed name could be in conflict with one of the criteria to ensure names were not duplicated, given there is already a Memorial Park in Drouin.
However, the Office of Geographic Names provided in principle support for the park name.
“The renaming is an appropriate recognition for the sacrifices made by local men and women in wars and conflicts around the World
“The proposal provides the community with a park name that better reflects the Longwarry RSL cenotaph location, Anzac day and Remembrance day services,” the report said.
