Cobras fail to bridge the gap

-

Cora Lynn failed to bridge the gap to Inverloch-Kongwak on their second attempt, going down to the Sea Eagles by 26 points at Inverloch on Easter Saturday, 12-21 (93) to 9-13 (67).

Attempting to turn the tables on their season opening match, where they fell away in the final term to go down by six goals, the Cobras again found the Sea Eagles a little too good.

The Cobras came out firing in the first term and matched the home side, going into the first break locked at 3-3 (21) apiece.

But the Sea Eagles would build on their lead from that point, turning a 12-point half time lead into a 23-point advantage at the final change of ends.

It was only wayward kicking at goal that had kept the Cobras in the contest, with the Sea Eagles following a 3-8 second term with a return of 2-8 in the third quarter.

Given the fact Inverloch-Kongwak were the far fitter side in the season opener, one could have assumed another blow out, but to the Cobras’ credit they fought the match out until the end, matching the home side in the final term to go down by 26-points.

William Thomas continued his strong form to be the Cobras best. He kicked two goals, as did Nathan Gillis.

Other prominent players for the Cobras were Darren Maggio, Jason Toan, Jackson Dalton, Jeremy Monckton and Nathan Langley.

Toby Mahoney once again proved a handful for the Cobras, booting four goals to head the goal kicking table after round two.

Josh Clottu kicked three goals in a performance worthy of taking the three votes, while Andrew Soumilas, Clinton McCaughan, Santo Joma and Tom Wyatt were other prominent players.

Blistering Bulldogs

A blistering seven goal final quarter saw Phillip Island comfortably account for Koo wee rup, 12-9 (81) to 7-8 (50).

A real arm wrestle had ensued in what had been a low scoring affair for the first three quarters.

The Demons headed into the final change of ends leading 6-6 to 5-7, but came to a grinding halt as the Bulldogs piled on seven goals in the final term.

Steven Pimm finished with five goals and was effectively the difference where goals proved hard to come by. He was supported by Jarrod Andreatta, Jarrod Witnish, Jack Taylor, Rhett O’Hara and Arie Cook.

The Demons were best served by Steven Greaves, Luke Walker, Ryan Wilby, Nathan Muratore, David Collins and Tim Miller.

Ex-AFL players star

Dalyston defeated Kilcunda Bass by just four points in a cliffhanger to complete the split round.

The Magpies raced out to a 25-point lead at half time but Brent Macaffer’s side wasn’t done with, storming home with five majors in the final term only to just fall short, 11-10 (76) to 1012 (72).

The match featured three former AFL players and each had an impact as one would expect. Former Carlton forward Brad Fisher booted three goals for the Magpies, only to be bettered by former Brisbane Lion Mitchell Golby, who kicked four goals at the other end.

Kristian Butler, Blake Carew, Dean Wylie, Kurt Thomas, Matthew Whittaker and Jack Legione were the better players for Dalyston.

Kilcunda-Bass named Matthew Edwards, David Hutchinson, Macaffer, Dale Crawford, Golby and Luke James (four goals) as their best.
