Hockey actions starts at Drouin

In an action packed weekend on the Synthetic turf, West Gippsland Hockey Associatio­n will be running practice matches over the entire weekend, while the Gippsland Bulls will be fired up for their first weekend of fixtured matches at the ground on Saturday.

WGHA will run morning practice matches on Saturday before the season starts the following weekend. U12: 9am, U14: 10am, U17: 1am. The U17 practice matches will be followed by the action-packed season opener for the Gippsland Bulls men’s Vic League teams against Melbourne club PEGS.

The Reserves play at 12.30pm followed by the firsts at 2pm and the Gippsland Bulls women at 3.30pm against Southern United.

The action continues on Sunday afternoon with WGHA senior practice matches with women playing at 1.30pm, and men playing at 2.30pm.

These WGHA practice matches will also enable all umpires will have an opportunit­y to refresh their skills and umpire coaching will be available on both days.

The WGHA welcomes new players at all levels. It is not too late to get involved this great sport.

Spectators are welcome and there is no admission cost.

Athlone badminton

Despite not winning a game, the Knights managed to defeat the Pirates by just one point in round six of Athlone badminton.

The Vikings had a solid win over the Cowboys, while the Ninjas had their biggest win of the season. Results: Knights d Pirates 98-97, Vikings d Cowboys 114-71, Ninjas d Princesses 119-90.

Ladder: Pirates 33 points (121.53 per cent), Knights 27 (103.53), Vikings 25 (103.15), Princesses 22 (103.37), Ninjas 19 (91.58), Cowboys (18) 99.66).
