Film fundraiser
Academy Award nominated film “Tanna” will be shown in Warragul to raise funds for education and healthcare in Vanuatu.
Warragul Rotary Club is hosting the film fundraising night on Wednesday, May 3 at 7pm at Warragul Peninsula Cinema.
“Tanna” is a tale of love and tragedy which some have called a Vanuatu version of Romeo and Juliet. However, this is no ordinary story about star-crossed lovers.
Made by Australian filmmakers Bentley Dean and Martin Butler and nominated for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards, the film is based on an actual incident which rocked the island of Tanna in Vanuatu.
The cast are local Tanna islanders, none of whom are professional actors.
“Tanna” was released last year and has not been previously shown in Warragul.
All proceeds will support Warragul Rotary Club’s project to ship education and medical supplies to five villages in Vanuatu. Part of the club’s International Avenue of Service, the project is a collaboration between Warragul Rotary Club, Rotary International and Uniting Church of Warragul.
More than $8000 has already been raised, including $2000 from the Rotary club itself.
The first container of supplies will be sent in May with aims for future shipments.
Tickets to “Tanna” are $20 per person including light supper after the film.
