Film is a ‘must see’
A thought-provoking film exploring schooling in the 21st century will be screened at Marist-Sion College in Warragul on Wednesday, May 3.
Described as “must see viewing” for parents and the wider community, the free screening of the award-winning “Most Likely to Succeed” film forms part of Catholic Education Week celebrations.
Marist-Sion College principal Peter Houlahan said the film was about an experimental high school in the US.
At a time when schools face challenges of educating students for jobs that don’t yet exist, Mr Houlahan said this very revolutionary school focuses on creative thinking, problem solving and ability to work with others rather than a highly-structured curriculum.
He said this film highlighted challenges posed by schools, “particularly at a time when the predictable nature of what students need for study and work is no longer there”.
“Parents have a very important role in not only understanding what education can be but in supporting their children in that and schools in progression,” said Mr Houlahan.
The US school has students work in groups with a pair of teachers on a major task. The teachers are from two diverse subjects, such as a history and technology or English and drama.
The film “Most Likely to Succeed” and an evening of dialogue about what matters most for students today will be held on Wednesday, May 3 from 6.30pm at Marian Theatre at Marist-Sion College.
There is no cost to attend and it is open to all members of the community. However, bookings must be made at trybooking.com/PJPU.
