New look for wetlands
People who regularly walk at the wetlands area near Summerhill Boulevard, Drouin might wonder who is responsible for a recent clean up.
The banks of dead weeds, thistles and overgrowth along the paths and under the old Strzelecki Gum behind the fence has been cleaned. The group responsible is the Friends of Drouin’s Trees.
The group holds regular working bees and, after four mornings at work in this wetlands area, have started to make headway with the backlog of weed overgrowth. Some of the “fleabane” and scotch thistles were as tall as a person.
Friends of Drouin’s Trees developed the Significant Tree Register for Baw Baw Shire and are actively involved in producing a “Tree Walk” book for Drouin. They promote and educate the community around the value of urban trees.
Volunteer groups like Friends of Drouin’s Trees quietly go about our towns supporting council in keeping the places we live well maintained for everyone to enjoy.
