Can Shirley find a new lease on life?

-

A mother will seek to escape her tedious life to achieve her full potential in an entertaining monologue in Trafalgar and Neerim South next week.

“Shirley Valentine” by the award-winning writer Willy Russell will be performed at Trafalgar Public Hall on Tuesday, May 2 at 7.30pm and JD Algie Hall in Neerim South on Wednesday, May 3 at 7.30pm.

This wonderfully entertaining monologue stars Mandi Lodge who plays a 42-year-old Liverpool mother whose self-esteem has been battered by school, marriage and life in general.

When her best friend wins a Greek vacation for two, Shirley grasps the chance to head for the sun, to re-find herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life.

With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human insight and a great deal of empathy for his female protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society.

“This play is a modern classic and its theme of achieving your full potential remains universal and very relevant today,” said director Denny Lawrence.

Mandi Lodge has previously appeared in “Menopause The Musical” and “Always… Patsy Cline”.

Trafalgar Public Hall is located at 32 Contingent St, Trafalgar and JD Algie Hall at Main Neerim Rd, Neerim South.

Tickets to “Shirley Valentine” are $45 for adults, $43 for concession, $38 for members and groups, and $28 for under 18s.
