Special Anzac win for Crows

Longwarry needed a strong second half to shake off a determine Poowong.

Having gone down to Ellinbank by just nine points a fortnight prior, the Magpies kept their competitiv­e nature going for the first half.

Trailing by just five points at half time in what was shaping as a shootout, Poowong fell away in the second half as the Crows went on to a big win, 23-14 (152) to 13-6 (84).

A special Anzac ceremony was held prior to the senior match, but the Crows weren’t inspired in the first half with a spray delivered at half time.

The Crows fired into gear after the break, booting six goals in the third term followed by a further eight majors in the last quarter to run out an easy victory.

Cory Lenders booted six goals in a performanc­e worthy of best on ground honours, while Brody and Riley Rundell, speedster Kane Oldham, Aarong Serong and coach Daniel Fry were other influentia­l players.

Glenn Attenborou­gh, Lachlan Green, Tim Hancock, Tristan Hawksworth, Josh Chaivaroli and Josh Harvey ensured the Magpies were competitiv­e in the first half along with Chris Doria, who finished with five goals.

Magpies hold on

Better accuracy almost served Longwarry well in the Reserves, but it was Poowong who held on to win by just three points, 10-14 (74) to 11-5 (71).

Better kicking for goal had granted the Crows a narrow lead at the final change of ends, but the Magpies took their opportunit­ies in the thrilling final term that realised seven goals between the two teams.

Zach Smith, Jordan Knox, Shannon Logan, Daniel Fox, Jack Lancaster and Mark Stephens were the better players for Poowong.

The Crows were best served by Braydon Monroe, Dom Pullen, Brendon Parnaby, Cale Popovits, Ben McKenna and John Werner.

Magpies swoop

Poowong comfortabl­y accounted for Longwarry in the under 16s, 13-13 (91) to 6-3 (39).

The Crows were competitiv­e in the final term, but the damage had been done.

Kyle Loveridge booted six goals for the Magpies, with Jai Newcombe, William Walker, Thomas Hudson and Joel Darts also prominent.

Bailey Stephens, Jonah Serong, David Ahrens, Aidan Fox, Jordyn de Kort and Brodie Bould helped the Crows win the final quarter.
