Artists play in May

-

Gippsland will come alive with artistic endeavours this May as part of Creative Gippsland’s “Come and Play - All of May” celebration of local arts.

Now in its eighth year, this month-long celebration shines the spotlight on our creative communities and is spread across the six Gippsland regions including Baw Baw Shire.

It will feature a dazzling array of performances and exhibitions designed to take you on a voyage of discovery.

Baw Baw Shire mayor Joe Gauci said it was a unique chance to explore local art, geography and produce hand-in-hand. He added this year promises to be similarly diverse and bountiful.

“The opportunity to get hands-on experience in the creative process is one of the most popular aspects of this month of creativity,” said Cr Gauci. “Each year, there’s the chance to take part in arts workshops and get up close to the artists in their workspace. Baw Baw Shire will see some fantastic workshops offered, including printmaking, etching, and sculpting among others.”

The celebration will also feature an artist-inresidence program with visual artist Anne Riggs to be hosted by the Walhalla Board of Management. Anne will spend seven days in Walhalla to create an artwork in response to the environment and community.

For Walhalla, it is a chance for residents and visitors to spend time with an artist with new ideas and ways of looking at their world.

Artists will host local workshops to teach life clay sculpting, linocut, metal etching, zentangle, mosaics, wax work and ceramics. Children are not forgotten with two workshops aimed at children from six-years-old.

The Eclectic Art Group again holds an exhibition at Warragul Mitsubishi from May 3 to 31 and Baw Baw Arts Alliance members host exhibition “Colour My World” at Yarragon Station Gallery from May 3 to 28.
