There were some “big” results in the region’s football leagues at the weekend. None were bigger or more important than Warragul’s Gippsland League victory over Maffra at Western Park in front of a big crowd swelled by about 200 past players and officials having a reunion. The Gulls shook off a determined last quarter challenge from the undefeated Eagles to win by 23 points. Traralgon is the only unbeaten side after it got the better of Leongatha with seven goals to two in the second half. Sale was goalless for a half before going down 8-6 to 12-18 against Morwell, Wonthaggi Power toppled Bairnsdale and Moe had a big win over Drouin. In Mid Gippsland League Trafalgar, Thorpdale, Newborough and Yinnar all won to sit on four wins from five games. Newborough just got there, by seven points over Yarragon in a game that was close all day; Thorpdale swamped Boolarra, Trafalgar was too good in its rivalry clash with Hill End and Yinnar scraped in by four points against a wayward Morwell East. The Tigers kicked 1-6 in the final term to two behinds to lose 5-15 to 7-7. The other winner in the round was Yallourn Yallourn North that sits on three wins after disposing of Mirboo North. The Ellinbank and District League match-of-the-day saw Ellinbank maintain its undefeated record downing Warragul Industrials, also with three wins going into the game. The Eagles made the most of the good weather early to set up a match-winning lead in the first term that they were able to maintain to score 11-7 to 5-11 at the final siren. Neerim Neerim South sit in top spot on percentage after another strong win, at the weekend over Nilma-Darnum. Catani joined Industrials on three wins when it accounted for Nyora, Buln Buln was too good for Poowong and Longwarry edged out Lang Lang by seven points,6-8 to 5-7. In the West Gippsland competition Bunyip is still searching for its first win, losing by 28 points to Koo wee rup on Saturday. Inverloch-Kongwak went down for the first time losing to Kilcunda-Bass that kicked seven goals to three in the second half, Dalyston was an easy winner over Nar Nar Goon and Garfield, 11 points up at quarter time, lost 1010 to 7-7 to Phillip Island. There were some strange goings on in the Cora Lynn versus Korumburra-Bena clash eventually won by the Cobras 7-19 to 6-17. The combine may have kicked away a winning chance with 1-10 in the first term but Cora Lynn was only marginally better in the final quarter adding 1-9.
