Grade five and six students at Warragul North Primary School dressed up in authentic Australian World War One uniforms during a recent Anzac history lectures.

Students also handled equipment as used by the Anzacs of World War One during the interactive lectures, which were held over two days ahead of the grade six students’ excursion to the Canberra War Museum.

Lectures include talks on the history of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli, the Australian Imperial Forces on the Western Front, and the role of the Australian Light Horsemen and their horses with emphasis on the charge at Beersheba.

The lectures are a free service provided to the West Gippsland School Cluster for both primary and secondary school age students, and provided by the Warragul RSL and the Shrine of Remembrance Trust.

Warragul Municipal Band

The Band much appreciated the Bouquet it received in ‘The Gazette’ (2/5) for its efforts in ‘marching in the rain on ANZAC Day and then ‘sitting in wet shirts in the drizzle and wind to continue playing hymns and the National Anthem’.

Of course, it was the same for all those veterans and community members who marched behind the Band, not to mention many who were just as exposed to the elements during the commemoration service.

April 25th is one of the most important days of service to the community on the Band’s calendar. The whole Band is involved but particular individuals played special roles on the day.

“Special mention should be made of our official Buglers, Julie Reilly and Jeffrey Hughes for the several significant duties they performed at the Dawn Service, Cenotaph and services thereafter; together with our Drum Major, Anthony Gardner (supported by Assistant Drum Major, George Smith) in preparing and leading the Band in a fine parade,” Band musical director Ben Sim said.

Julie also played the Last Post at the Lifestyle service and the Warragul Greyhounds commemoration.

Ben also thanked Band and committee member Jennifer Smith, for her attention to uniform detail with all the Band turning out beautifully in new black trousers. A generous Drouin Community Bank grant funded the purchase of these new uniform items.

By the time these notes are published the Learner’s Band members, led by Anthony Gardner, will have showcased their developing musical talents at the Fairview Fete.

The Senior Band is very much looking forward to being at Warragul Railway Station on Saturday to provide a traditional brass music welcome to the Rotary Steam Train.

The Band’s rehearsal attention is also currently focused on the Bendigo Brass competitions at the end of May.

New brass or percussion players of all ages are always welcome. Phone secretary Alister on 5626 8543.
