Lyrebirds move into top five

-

Buln Buln ran out big winners over Poowong, 15-17 (107) to 2-1 (13).

The Lyrebirds kicked away in the first term, holding a 36-point lead at the first change.

While the Magpies held their own in a low scoring second term, they conceded seven majors in the third quarter to well and truly put the match beyond their reach.

The match petered out in the final term, both sides managing one goal apiece, but the Lyrebirds had already ensured they had added some much-needed percentage.

Many would have expected the Magpies, who recruited reasonably well from Devon Meadows, to have at least been competitive against some of the middle of the road sides. They will need to go back to the drawing board following consecutive heavy defeats.

Mitch Nobelius kicked four goals for the Lyrebirds, while Trent Baker, Luke Nobelius, Darcy Brown, Jake Pierrehumbert and coach Matt Gray were also dominant.

Ruckman Conor Cunningham, Josh Chiavaroli, Tim Hancock, Jack Hazendonk, Alex Doria and John Smith did their best to stem the tide for Poowong.

Buln kick away

Buln Buln kicked away in the second half to comfortably account for a determined Poowong in the Reserves, winning 9-11 (65) to 6-5 (41).

Poowong were still in the game at half time, closing the gap to just 13-points.

The Lyrebirds then kicked out to a six-goal lead at three-quartertime to effectively have the match in their keeping, although the Magpies showed some pride to win the final quarter.

Jack Martyn, Mitchell Park, Reece Campbell and Paul Pratt helped the Lyrebirds to victory.

Magpies finish fast

Buln Buln held off a fast finishing Poowong to win the under 18s, 10-9 (69) to 8-5 (53).

The Lyrebirds held sway for the first three quarters of the contest, building out to a 41-point lead at the final change.

However a final term lapse almost proved costly as Poowong charged home, the Magpies booting six goals to two to put some respectability back into the scoreboard.

Jesse Brown kicked three goals for Buln Buln, while James Fowler, Reece Campbell, Thomas Bibby, Kyan Willis, Jediah Melbourne and Ryan Wellings helped build the Lyrebirds’ lead.

Jai Newcombe kicked three goals for Poowong, with Jordan Knox, Josh McNally, Jake Henry and Darcy Burgess leading the Magpies’ charge home.

Magpies in control

Poowong recorded another comfortable win in the under 16s, this time accounting for Buln Buln 1011 (71) to 2-6 (18).

The Magpies were in control from start to finish, with a five goal to one second term effectively putting the match out of the Lyrebirds’ reach.

Kyle Loveridge kicked three goals, while other better players were Mathew Burr, Jai Newcombe, Thomas Hudson, Darcy Burgess and Caspian Jackson-Riches.

The Lyrebirds were best served by Jack Storey, Jaryd Kelly, Thomas Jessup, Josh Pearn, Jack Chesterfield and Reid Strachan.
