Magpies wait for first win
The Poowong faithful remain waiting for their first win of the season, with Nyora proving too strong to win 17-11 (113) to 8-7 (55).
The Magpies had hoped its new recruits would help it score ‘a few’ wins this season under new coach Mitch Hawken to build for next season, and an opportunity up against the lowly Saints at home went begging.
The Saints were out of the blocks early, kicking out to a 20-point lead at the first change.
While the Magpies were competitive in patches, including an even second quarter, the Saints were simply too good across the majority of the four quarters to run out a strong victory.
Five goals to one in the third term effectively put the match in Nyora’s keeping, with the Saints finishing off with five goals to three in a high-scoring final term.
Ilan Osman kicked five goals, while Kallon Rigby, Chris Hodges, Tim Burns, Adam Jamieson, Jesse Heylen and Aiden Cumberland also helped the Saints to a big win.
Poowong were best served by Alex Doria, Jack Hazendonk, Matthew Cozzio, Jameel Knecht, Thomas Wyatt and Rhyse Shortis.
Magpies swoop
Poowong fared better in the Reserves, scoring 7-11 (53) to 4-10 (34) to take the points.
The Magpies gradually built their lead throughout, although the Saints were still in touch late into the contest.
Paul Bills kicked three goals for Poowong, while other better players were Jake Cooper, Mark Stephens, Ben White, Jake Lewis, Ashley McIntosh and Ben Schulz.
Nyora were best served by Ashley Meade, Hayden Watson, Kyle Dorman, Matt Layton, Brendan Hodge and Bill Hessels.
Future bright
Poowong’s under 18 team pointed to a brighter future, accounting for Ellinbank 7-10 (52) to 4-10 (34).
The Eagles fought back in the final term of the match played at Longwarry, but left their run too late after the Magpies had kicked out to a comfortable lead.
Darcy Burgess kicked three goals for the Magpies, with Jai Newcombe, Mitchell Van’T Hof, Josh McNally, Mathew Burr and Scott Loughridge also helping to build the match winning lead.
