Bombers show promise, but fall to Blues

-

Catani comfortably accounted for Nilma-Darnum to consolidate its position inside the top five, winning 13-14 (92) to 5-5 (35).

The Bombers showed promise early, taking an eight point lead into quarter time as they threatened a return to their best.

However the Blues were able to take control from that point, with another drop off in form proving costly for the Bombers.

The Bombers could only manage one goal for the remainder of the contest, while the Blues added 10 majors to run out a comfortable victory.

While Ryan Eaton had a quiet day, Owen Fitzpatrick stepped up as the main target to finish with six goals.

John Alexander chipped in with three goals to help the Blues to a strong victory, with Dale Johnson, James Alexander, Nathaniel Rodda, ruckman Brandon Scammell and Nicholas Visser also helping the Blues to hold the ascendency.

Rhys Chalkley kicked three goals for the Bombers, while Ben Campbell, Jean Bezzene, Nathan Campbell, Hayden Potts and Luke Lange also among the better players.

Blues power away

Catani were big winners in the Reserves, 23-16 (154) to 2-2 (14).

The Blues powered away with eight goals in the first term and were never headed.

Josh Tymensen continued to push his case for senior selection, booting seven goals, while Blake Matthews and Mitchell Gregson each chipped in with three majors.

Cody Banbury, Leigh Jose, Luke McFarlane and Shane Warren were also prominent.

The Bombers were best served by Corey Wright, Sean Viotto, Luke Galley, Aaron Larkman, Nicholas Denholm and Aaron Gardner.

Bombers bright

Nilma-Darnum’s bright spot for the day came at Buln Buln, where its under 16 team continued its good recent run of form to win by a solitary point.

The Bombers won a thriller, coming from behind to win 4-3 (27) to 3-8 (26).

With the match beginning in heavy fog, the Lyrebirds held a slender lead for the majority of the contest only to suffer heartbreak, the Bombers scoring a goal in the final term and holding on.

Blake Kahan, Blake Cann, Korey Carrison, Sebastian Crowle and Blake Davis helped set up another inspiration win for the Bombers.

For Buln Buln it was Jake Smith, Jack Storey, Max Chesterfield, Brodie Lowe, Jacob Blackstock and Thomas Jessup who helped almost get the home team over the line.
