Bulldogs outplay Bloods

- By Laurie Williams

Newborough outplayed Trafalgar for four quarters in a game expected to be a lot closer.

The first eight goals in the match came from eight individual players and at half time there was very little between the two teams.

Two defensive errors and two free kicks gave Newborough their first four goals, but it took seven minutes before the first major was posted.

Play was a scramble and it resembled “reserves on steroids” as the play was fast but ineffective with mass turnovers after continual stoppages.

Chris Hancock was playing a big part in the early dominance by Newborough and Josh Hecker was also good in parts although at one stage ran 60 metres, had three bounces and with an open goal in front shanked the ball to out on the full. He made up for that error with a goal a few moments later.

Tackling was fierce from both teams but Newborough appeared the stronger.

Newborough were ahead with inside fifties but couldn’t convert the more opportunities and at half time it was a 13 point ball game with Newborough in the lead.

After half time Newborough got into the swing of things and started to play positive football.

Handballs were hitting the target and players such as Josh Hecker and Tony Battista were kicking multiple goals and by three quarter Newborough had doubled Trafalgar’s score.

Anthony Phillip in defence was a tower and very little passed him, the Dogs weren’t afraid to pass across opposition goals to clear the ball.

Newborough mopped up after three quarter time with a further five goals to run out 36 point winners, 13-7 (85) to 77 (49).

Tony Battista finished with four goals for Newborough, while for Trafalgar it was a picket fence with seven goal kickers.

Newborough and Trafalgar now stand at 5-1 wins apiece.

Trafalgar with the loss has dropped from third to fifth on the table.
