Baw Baw Region Arthritis Support Group

It’s nearly the end of autumn and the group welcomed back Mary from ill health and Thelma from holidays.

The group is also celebrating four birthdays this month with a lunch outing to the Drouin Family Hotel on May 21, preceded by parma night at the golf club in Warragul on May 23.

The swimming group is going along modestly and nicely. Credit must go to both leaders Julia and Julie for the way its run and the effort they put in to the planning of the lessons.

Chair based classes are still going strong and president and vice president went for re-training at Pakenham last week.

The group congratulated Barb and Julie, having successfully applied for a small grant, one that will help buy some equipment and pay some bills.

Hopefully a lot of people enjoyed celebrating Mother’s Day.

West Gippsland Genealogical Society

The annual general meeting of the Genealogical Society will be held Thursday, May 25.

Guest speaker will be Max Beck presenting “A Different Earth”, an epic tale of a resident pioneering woman.

Heather Sjoberg presented “James Neilson and Isabella Gibson: Gippsland Pioneers” at the April meeting. This is Heather’s first book in a series called “For Those Who’ve Come across the Seas”.

The Neilson family came from Scotland to Gippsland via Sydney in 1841 to settle in Tarraville. They were one of the first white families to settle there.

Heather has set out to present the stories of her ancestors with a picture of the times in which they lived.

Heather kindly donated her second book in the series: “Alexander Archibald and Emily Morgan: Donnelly’s Creek Gold” to the WGGS library collection.

The pop-up event held at the Baw Baw Shire kiosk on Thursday, May 18 was an interesting day with members of the public stopping and having a chat to the WGGS volunteers.

The Family History Writers Circle will meet on Friday at the Warragul Library between 10am and noon. All welcome. The Society meet on the upper floor of the Old Shire Hall, Queen St, Warragul at 8pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

At the April meeting, guest speaker Michelle Harrop proudly showed her Drouin garden to members via a powerpoint presentation.

As well as photos of her garden as it developed over the years, she had photos of the individual plants complete with names. It was a great way to keep a record of her garden. Club members hope to visit Michelle’s garden later in the year.

The show bench was well contested with the flower of the month award going to Lorraine Barrett and the best exhibit award won by Judy Butler. Judge June Dineen explained to members about the method used in show bench judging.

Warragul Evening CWA

The members of Warragul Evening CWA Branch were pleased to be asked by Rotary to cater at the A2 Steam train event recently.

All members contributed with homemade cakes, slices, cream puffs, lamingtons, savory muffins and sandwiches, the result being a lavish morning tea for 70 invited guests.

The women worked in with the request from Peter Dell and the Rotary members. The end result was a fantastic day had by all members of the public.

Fifteen members of the West Gippsland Bushwalking Club recently cleared overgrowth to widen several walking tracks in the Bunyip State Park.

With instructions from park ranger Andy Musgrove and equipment supplied by Parks Victoria, the track clearing crew of club members spent the best part of the day working on some five kilometres of the Lawson Falls Track and the Discovery Track.

The Bunyip State Park covers almost 17,000 hectares and has an extensive network of walking tracks which in the high rainfall of the area can quickly become overgrown.

Parks Victoria ranger Andy Musgrove explained there are three bushwalking clubs who volunteer to maintain 25 kilometres of tracks in the park. In a typical year volunteers provide 4000 hours towards park maintenance.

Members of the West Gippsland Bushwalking Club often walk in various parts of the Bunyip State Park and are keen to help with the upkeep of this valuable community resource.

Lawson Falls are the only water falls in the park and can be seen in a pleasant and relatively easy return walk of 90 minutes.

The West Gippsland Bushwalking Club walks fortnightly on a Tuesday with three walking groups to cater for people of differing levels of fitness.
