Gulls showcase sizzling form

Warragul’s A grade maintained its winning streak against Sale, whilst C grade remains undefeated. A grade: Warragul 55 defeated Sale 44. The Gulls had an amazing start with Hayley Roberts taking numerous intercepts and the goalers scoring quickly for a 18-10 lead.

The Magpies came out hard in the second and the Gulls were a little startled. They made too many unforced errors as the Magpies outscored them.

At half-time, the Gulls regrouped and a few little changes allowed them an eight-goal lead going into the last quarter. A strong final quarter gave the Gulls the win. It was a top game by goaler Anna Green, strong defence by young gun Eboni Wall whilst Cara McIntosh provided a number of intercepts and rebounds in the last quarter. All three won awards. B grade: Warragul 38 defeated Sale 41. Warragul had a strong first quarter and were dominate across the court. With accuracy in goals by Jess Murty and Chiara Mulqueen, Warragul led 15-8 at quarter time.

Warragul worked hard with their defensive pressure. Fatigue set in due to the warm weather along with with minor turnovers. As a result, Warragul were not able to keep their lead and were defeated by three goals. Awards: Grace Cant and Chiara Mulqueen. C grade: Warragul 36 defeated Sale 28. Warragul went into the game thinking it was going to be tough, and that it was!

In very warm conditions, the Gulls had a slow start. However, some changes that saw Kelly Sheehan moved into goals in the second quarter proved very effective.

Kim Weller and Kelly Sheehan worked well together in the ring, while Georgia Lyons and Laura McCullough fed well. The lead got out a bit in the second quarter but Sale fought back to show Warragul they would have to work hard for four quarters.

McKenzie Minichiell­o stood out in defence and took many intercepts. It wasn't an easy game, but good to come away with the win.

Awards: McKenzie Minichiell­o and Kim Weller. Under 17: Warragul 26 lost to Sale 38. Warragul displayed some great passages of play in the first quarter, however, both defensive combinatio­ns worked well to create a number of turnovers. Elly Radford was outstandin­g in goal defence with many deflection­s and intercepts. At quarter time, Sale led 13-7.

Sale’s defenders and midcourt took control in the second quarter with a number of intercepts and fast transition­s. Although Warragul continued to work hard all over the court, the Sale team demonstrat­ed why it is in the top half of the ladder. At half-time, Sale led 26-12.

Warragul made a number of changes in the second half. The combinatio­n of Tahlia Orlicki and Elly Radford in defence restricted Sale to 12 goals. The midcourt continued working tirelessly to carry the ball into the goal circle, as Ivy Cant and Lizzie Bayley added 14 goals to the Warragul scoreline. A great effort by the girls.

Awards: Elly Radford, Tahlia Orlicki, Sarah Kaine and Indya Fries. Under 15: Warragul 20 lost to Sale 64. This week was definitely one of the hardest games yet. Sale were a very strong side who outplayed the Gulls.

However, well done to both goal ends for putting training into practice. The forceful defence combinatio­n of Jacinta Bagot and Elodie Williamson made a significan­t difference to the end score.

Even though Sale came out on top, the Gulls led by the defenders, never put their heads down. Grace Radford and Bridie Mulqueen did a tremendous job. They didn’t miss many goals and got a majority of the rebounds when they did.

Awards: Grace Radford, Bridie Mulqueen, Elodie Williamson and Meg Emery. Under 13: Warragul 1 lost to Sale 51. It was a tough game for the Gulls against a very strong and in form Sale. With individual and team goals set, it was great to see the girls focus on these and improve as the game went on.

Lucy Williamson, Tess Talbot and Tia Jenkins all played well, with good run and strong voices.

It was great to see celebratio­ns after our goal and lots of support for each other. A hard game but every player left the court with a smile and having played her best.
