Dragons take it up to Mentonians
Drouin Dragons took it up to Old Mentonians in round eigtht of state league soccer 5.
Two goals in the opening half had the 11th placed Dragons well on the way to causing an upset over the fourth-placed Old Mentonians.
The referee dishing out a red card didn’t help Drouin’s cause, as the Old Mentonians scored two second half goals to pinch victory.
Spiver scored the penalty to set the Old Mentonians on their way.
The Old Mentonians were too strong for the Dragons in the Reserves, winning 7-1.
Old Mentonians found the back of the net four times in the first half, the Dragons scoring a consolation goal in the second half.
Drouin had the bye in Gippsland Soccer League.
Bunyip strike
Meanwhile, Bunyip Strikers scored a big 5-1 win over Somerville Eagles.
The win over the bottom of the table Eagles, their second of the season, moved the Strikers to ninth ahead of rivals White Star Dandenong and Drouin.
The Strikers didn’t fare as well in the Reserves, going down 3-1.
United’s day to forget
In state league 1, Warragul United went down to Malvern City 2-1 at Kooyong Park.
Josh Vitale scored in the first half, but Malvern City were able to run over the top, scoring two goals in the second half.
The loss saw United slip to ninth following a positive start to the season.
United had a day to forget in the Reserves, going down 8-0.
Malvern City pressed hom the advantage in the second half, slamming through six goals.
