Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Fresh conditions for football

- By Harrison Johnstone

It was a fresh week for the players of the Warragul and District Junior Football League, featuring huge scorelines and stamping out match jitters on new home turf.

The sides definitely had their goal kicking boots on, many quarters had heavy scoring in the mix.

Yarragon scored early with a few quick goals. Drouin fought back and by the third quarter scores were level.

Both teams came into the last quarter with all they had, and both teams fought right up until the last second.

The Jets came home with the win by only two points.

The Cobras and Ellinbank put on a fantastic show of tight footy.

Drouin opened strong with an early first quarter goal, Ellinbank responding with a goal of their own in the second.

It was score for score until the Cobras pulled away by less than a goal to take the win.

The Warragul side opened well, booting three goals to one in the first quarter against a feisty Neerim Districts side.

An incredible second quarter goal haul saw the Colts chalk up a huge lead, the Cats only managing to respond with a couple of forward chances. The Colts took the game in the end. Garfield put on a textbook display of junior footy, with free flowing play and goals aplenty.

Hallora's early goal wasn't enough to match the unforgiving Garfield forward line, who took the game.

Conditions were great for Caldermeade's first home game at Lang Lang.

It was top versus bottom for this under 14s clash, and it was a hard slog for all.

The Warragul Blues came out fighting at the first siren and ran all game, coming away with a solid win.

It was a fast paced game in great conditions when Warranor took on Longwarry.

The Warragul side moved the ball well, while Longwarry held a strong defence.

Warranor pushed hard and came away with the win.

Garfield and Hallora put on a great display of football on a dewy oval.

Garfield got off to a strong start and Hallora did their best to keep up but couldn't match the Stars on the scoreboard. The Jets started well with a quick goal early. Yarragon started slowing them up by the end of the first.

In the second quarter Yarragon couldn't seem to score, even though the ball had plenty of time up forward.

The last half saw Drouin stay strong and Yarragon unable to score.

Ellinbank were fast to start with two quick goals.

Cobras closed the game down and with some great marking, and kicked two goals in the first half.

In the second half both teams tackled hard with Ellinbank able to kick away.

In a good even contest in slippery conditions between both clubs, Longwarry capitalised on forward opportunities.

Dominic Keane kicking two important first quarter goals for the Crows.

Warranor couldn't close the gap, going down by two goals.

The Blues got off to a quick start, taking a commanding lead in the first quarter.

Caldermeade did well to fight on, but it wasn't enough to best the Warragul side on the day. Both teams started the game at full pace. The first quarter was fairly even, however the Colts stormed away in the second quarter finishing with six scoring shots.

Neerim stemmed the scoring tide in the second half, but the Colts were too strong running away winners by 44 points.

Bunyip came out strong in the first quarter and the Bulls played hard to close the gap.

Both sides worked for the ball all game but Bunyip were too strong in the end.

A strong first quarter by Hallora put Garfield on the back foot.

Garfield held their own in the second, slowing down Hallora before finally scoring a goal in the third.

Hallora picked up again in the last quarter to run away convincing winners.

Some great individual efforts by both teams, but an overall great effort from both sides with solid teamwork all around.

Yarragon were the first to get the ball into their forward half but the Jets were able to settle and send it into their forward 50.

The Jets got a couple of goals early in the match and were able to add to the score board consistently until winning by a decent margin.

The Drouin Cobras put on a solid display, consistently building on their score throughout the match.

Ellinbank did their best to keep up, but couldn't topple the score the Cobras built.

Longwarry applied fantastic pressure throughout the game.

Warranor were inaccurate to start, but found their range eventually and were too strong in the end with too much run left in them.

The Blues came out very strong and played solidly all game.

The Cannons tackled and chased well, but the Warragul side had the momentum.

The game started in foggy conditions. Colts dominated the first three quarters of the game, but could only manage to get points on the board.

Neerim kicked a lucky goal late in the third to take the lead for the first time in the game.

The fourth was set up to be a battle, but Neerim jumped the blocks to get two quick goals on the board that set them up for the win.

The Bulls started slowly and allowed the Bulldogs all the play in the first half. The Bunyip side were under the pump with Poowong-Loch's fierce pressure and strong tackling.

The Bulldogs linked up well and got a good score on the board.

The Mid Gippsland junior badminton match of the round was played between Drouin Gold and Warragul Blue in D grade.

Warragul started well winning the first doubles, but Isabelle and Willem for Drouin evened the score, winning the next game to give them the lead.

The last doubles was a hard game to win, going to three sets, with Drouin getting the points.

Warragul boys Aaron and Aiden won their singles, putting their team into the lead again and leaving it to the last singles to determine who would win.

Willem and Helena fought hard with the lead going back and forward, with Willem finally winning for Drouin but unfortunately with not enough aces, giving Warragul the match win.

The Association asks players to note they now play under order of merit, that is the strongest to the weakest players.

The committee discussed one team at its Sunday night meeting and if it happens again a penalty will apply.

Unfortunately one team has been penalised for repeated late scoresheets.

The Gippsland team event on Sunday was well attended.

The Association congratulated all that played, both those that played for MidGippsland and the players who filled in for other associations. More information to come next week. Some photos of the tournament are on the
