Pick and choose

I refer to the recent spate of letters to the editor on issues relating to religion and morality.

Whether the Bible is moral or immoral is the least of my worries. There is enough in the scriptures in support of either argument.

Everyone is free to pick and choose, just as everyone is free to believe what they want providing they do not bother, coerce or kill others.

But no one is entitled to claim high moral ground merely on the basis that they are followers of one or another of the world's many religions.

Perhaps one of the more disturbing aspects of religion is that it tends to divorce morality from human suffering.

Religion allows people to imagine that their concerns are moral when they have nothing to do with morality.
