Persistence pays off for Crows

-

Persistence paid off for Longwarry, finding themselves on the right side of the ledger in a close match against Nyora, 11-7 (73) to 10-9 (69).

Having lost close matches to NilmaDarnum and Ellinbank this season, the Crows had a reversal of fortunes as they got over the line in another close contest to put them on the cusp of the Ellinbank District football top five.

Having been pushed by the Saints in the first half, the Crows had to work hard to come from behind to take the points.

Six goals to four in the third term put the Saints in front by 13-points heading into the final quarter, but the Crows showed fight until the very end.

Keeping the Saints scoreless in the final term was a key factor in the outcome of the match, as the Crows added two goals to steal the match.

Jack Anning kicked three goals, while other better players were Cole Cook, Ben Cuckson, Zach Chaplin, Aaron and Jakob Serong.

Aiden Cumberland kicked three goals for the Saints. Coach Fia Tootoo, Michael Miller, Dylan Heylen, Matthew Murtagh and Sam Dixon also helped the Saints in their quest for an upset.

Crows win big

Longwarry were big winners in the Reserves, 15-11 (101) to 5-7 (37).

The Saints got the jump on a shellshocked Crows, kicking four goals in the first term to take a 14-point lead.

However they would only manage one more goal for the remainder of the match as the Crows kicked away.

A six-point half time lead was extended to 23 points at the final change, and the Crows took advantage of the continued momentum to boot six majors in the final term to blow the margin out.

Peter Harrison kicked six goals, while Mark Light, Ben McKenna, Shaun Eckhardt, John Werner and Tim Hill were also named among the Crows’ best.

Michael O’Rafferty, Rick Jordan, Sam Collis, James Harkess, Jack Ellams and Daniel Burns helped the Saints to a positive start.
