Gulls strong against Power

Warragul won two of the three senior grades in windy conditions at Wonthaggi.

A grade: Warragul 53 lost to Wonthaggi Power 58.

Warragul came out strong in the first quarter and were dominate across the court. With accuracy in goals by Anna Green and Jaime Rollinson, and great midcourt pressure by Alex Cole and Lexie Fenton, Warragul led by two goals.

Warragul worked hard with defensive pressure. However, due to some turnovers and the girls being a bit rattled, they lost their lead for the remainder of the game.

Alex Cole, playing her 150th club game, moved into goal keeper. It was a position she has yet to play this year but she did an amazing job.

Awards: Alex Cole, Anna Green and Jaime Rollinson.

B grade: Warragul 47 defeated Wonthaggi Power 39.

After a disappoint­ing narrow loss, Warragul were keen to redeem themselves.

Under 17s player Tahlia Orlicki stepped into goal shooter and fitted into the team with ease.

A sensationa­l effort by the attacking end, saw Warragul maintain a strong and consistent lead throughout the game.

Wonthaggi didn't give up easily but Warragul showed positive attitudes and determinat­ion.

Awards: Chiara Mulqueen, Tahlia Orlicki, Brooke Radford and Cindy Dawson.

C grade: Warragul 36 defeated Wonthaggi Power 32.

The undefeated Gulls were in for another tough game.

Georgia Lyons took control through the midcourt and fed well into the goalers. Wonthaggi were intense in defence but were still no match for the Kelly Sheehan/Kim Weller combinatio­n.

As always, Mackenzie Minichiell­o was great in defence, gaining a few rebounds which were key to the win.

Awards: Georgia Lyons, Mackenzie Minichiell­o, Kim Weller and Kelly Sheehan.

Under 17s: Warragul 23 lost to Wonthaggi Power 32.

Warragul had a fantastic first quarter in very windy conditions, with strong defence by Tahlia Orlicki and Elly Radford linking to the midcourt players and into Lizzie Bayley and Claire Sandman in goals. At the first break, they held a four-goal lead. Wonthaggi made wholesale changes for the second quarter and produced some excellent netball. They produced a seven-goal turnaround.

It was Warragul’s turn to make changes which allowed the team to regroup. Although they couldn’t replicate their first quarter, they had some excellent passages of play. Wonthaggi retained their three-goal lead.

The final quarter saw Wonthaggi pull away. Warragul could not manage the consistenc­y displayed by their opponent.

Awards: Elly Radford, Emily Sandman and Claire Sandman.

Under 15s: Warragul 10 lost to Wonthaggi Power 56.

Warragul aimed to put everything at training into practise, of which they did a great job.

Meg Emery did an awesome job in the midcourt, which helped Warragul get the ball into attack.

Stacie Myers once again put in a tremendous effort, making some great intercepts and putting the pressure on Wonthaggi. Jacinta Bagot did an amazing job in defence, making a huge difference to Wonthaggi’s final score.

Under U13s: Warragul 8 lost to Wonthaggi Power 56.

Playing a quality team, the Gulls took to the court with usual eagerness to learn and play despite facing the coldest conditions so far this season.

Many of the girls spent time in different positions, giving them an opportunit­y to see the game from a different perspectiv­e.

Zoe Phillips and Ella Pitkin both had strong games along with Jacinta Bagot showing her good form again in attack.
