Warragul netballers proved competitive but couldn’t match Leongatha on Saturday. A grade: Warragul 46 lost to Leongatha 61. Warragul led at quarter time thanks to accurate goaling from Anna Green and Jamie Rollinson.

The Parrots dominated possession in the second and third quarters, making the most of their opportunities to lead 45-31.

The Gulls worked tirelessly in the last and had great passages of play, but it was too little, too late.

Awards: Lucy Monahan, Anna Green and Jamie Rollinson. B grade: Warragul 41 lost to Leongatha 63. Facing the top team, Warragul was determined to show their ability to take it up to any team.

Drouin won three games against Maffra on Saturday. A grade: Drouin 56 defeated Maffra 35. It was a good win with two players out injured. Wing attack Kelly Hedley was fantastic to watch in both A and B grade, playing seven quarters. Also in attack, goal shooter Karina Proctor was fantastic against a very tall defender.

Awards went to the Hawks’ two young defenders Kym Diston and April Bethune who worked exceptionally well. They teamed up to apply pressure over any passes and shots. B grade: Drouin 56 defeated Maffra 40. The first quarter saw silly errors give Maffra an early lead. Drouin soon found form and took the lead by quarter time. Kylie Proctor and Jemyma Leishout shot accurately and with style, working to set each other up under the post.

Kelly Hedley used her speed to take control of the centre pass and drive the ball onto the circle. Wing defence Rachel Morris worked tirelessly all game, applying tight pressure on Maffra, forcing many long and awkward passes.

They were backed up by the relentless defence of Ali McArthur and Natalie Sloan who took Sheehan and Mackenzie Minichiello go down in the first quarter.

That didn't stop Warragul with Georgia Lyons into goal attack and Elly Radford into defence. It was a good fought out game.

Unfortunately, Leongatha’s physical defence created many turnovers to lead 22-11 at halftime.

Warragul matched it during the third quarter. While Leongatha still scored well, Indya Fries and Phoebe Graham were feeding well into the goalers. It was 33-20 at the last break.

Leongatha stepped up their attack and extended their lead despite the best defensive efforts of Elly Radford and Tahlia Orlicki.
