Warragul under 15s get first win

-

Warragul’s under 15 team celebrated its first win of the season against Maffra. A grade: Warragul 58 defeated Maffra 40. An outstanding team effort saw the Gulls take a strong win against Maffra.

Simply unstoppable defence yet again by Lucy Monahan, who was well supported by Cara McIntosh and Eboni Wall, created multiple opportunities in the attack end.

Hayley Roberts played a faultless game in wing attack, feeding the goalers with poise and precision. Both goalers worked tirelessly, supporting each other with their movement and accuracy. The coach could not be prouder of their efforts on Saturday.

Awards: Hayley Roberts, Anna Green and Alexandra Cole. B grade: Warragul 36 lost to Maffra 46. A quick start with accurate shooting enabled Warragul a three-goal lead at quarter time.

At the beginning of the second quarter, goal keeper Jessie Gleeson went down with a game ending ankle injury. This upset the momentum of the team, enabling Maffra to establish a small lead.

Ivy Cant, in her first senior game, quickly picked up the tempo and Warragul was able to match Maffra in the last quarter after a few positional changes. However, the Gulls couldn’t overcome Maffra's second and third quarter leads.

Awards: Cindy Dawson, Brooke Radford, Chiara Mulqueen, Olivia Brady, Ivy Cant and Grace Cant. C grade: Warragul 32 lost to Maffra 34. Warragul knew they had a big task ahead of them against the third placed Maffra. Too many unforced errors by Warragul in the first half saw them trailing by 10 at half-time.

Some positional changes and a marked increase in defensive pressure all over the court saw the Gulls come back in the third and fourth quarters. However, it was a case of too little, too late and they ultimately paid the price for a poor start. Under 17s: Warragul 19 lost to Maffra 61. With only six of the regular players available, Grace Radford stepped up to play her second game for the morning in defence with her sister Elly.

The girls struggled to adapt to the windy conditions. Maffra displayed skilled and efficient teamwork, while Warragul struggled to get the ball into the goal circle despite the good work of the defenders. Gradually Ivy Cant took control in goals, scoring all of Warragul’s first half goals.

Every player gave 100 per cent and there were excellent passages of attacking play during the second half. It wasn’t enough against a skilled opposition.

Awards: Indya Fries, Ivy Cant and Phoebe Graham. Under 15s: Warragul 44 defeated Maffra 43. The Gulls had their first win for the season, finishing a close game with a thrilling one-goal win.

The girls came out blazing and proved that they wanted the win from the start. Grace Radford was accurate in the goal ring and got the Gulls on a roll. Stacey Meyers played an amazing game, being instrumental down the court.

The last quarter was a true test, but the girls kept their composure and got the win. With a speechless fill-in coach, there was not one fault Jessie Gleeson could name.

Awards: Grace Radford, Stacey Myers and Bridie Mulqueen. Under 13s: Warragul 8 lost to Maffra 43. The girls showed fight against a big opposition in Maffra. Although their determination and ever improving skills did not reflect onto the scoreboard, the girls never gave up and consistently took on board advice being given to them.

Emily Hobbs played a vital role in centre, feeding well down the court. Jacinta Baggot again played a fantastic game in defence.

Awards: Emily Hobbs, Jacinta Baggot, Mia Radford, Tess Talbot and Zoe Phillips.
