Colts win test against rivals Bunyip

-

Sunday saw the Warragul Colts travel up the highway to play newly formed women's team Bunyip in the Development League of the South-East Women's.

Warragul have been dominating the league so far this year, and this game was going to be a test for the girls against Bunyip who were sitting seventh on the ladder.

The game started with free-flowing football with some long kicks and good marking, but the Bunyip defence was working overtime to ensure that Colts had to work hard for their shots at goal. In fact the first goal was not kicked until the eight minute mark of the first quarter by Louie Patten.

The Colts were quick out of the centre after the centre bounce to get their second goal but for the next 12 minutes they could only manage two points.

In the second quarter the Colts were dominating with ball being down their forward line for most of the quarter, but again the Bunyip defence was too good with the Colts scoring a solitary goal for the quarter.

The second half of the game was going to be tough for both sides that had been giving their all in the first two quarters, and it looked to be the Colts that had the stamina to continue on booting three more goals in the third term.

Pressure was mounting in the final term with some players more determined than others resulting in some minor scuffles but it was all Colts in the last kicking a further five goals to give them a convincing win against a determined Bunyip side.

Saturday night saw the Warragul Colts playing under lights at Eastern Park against the Morwell Eagles in their second last game of the home and away season.

The Colts were looking for a win to help with their entry into the finals.

It was a very cold night for the girls in muddy conditions. It didn't help but the girls from both teams played a fantastic game of footy and gave their all under trying conditions.\

Colts player Sabrina Francis was playing her 50th game of junior football for the Colts.

The Colts dominated from the first bounce, booting six goals in the first quarter alone to Morwell’s single point in a fantastic display of junior football.

Moving the ball quickly out of the centre and finding targets after a kick helped the girls to a high first quarter score.

The girls continued their efforts in what was a great team effort and by the time the end of the third quarter had arrived, the Colts had a handy 57-point lead.

The cold and mud had taken its toll with some very tired players with both sides unable to obtain any advantage, the Colts getting a point for the term before the final siren sealed the fate of Morwell, who never gave up during the game.

Final score - Warragul Colts 9-4 (58) d Morwell 0-1 (1).

Colts goals - Shanara Notman 5, 1 each to Scarlett Wells, Alicia Clerks, Channen Dare and Bonnie Lunney.

Colts best - Shaye Symes, Victoria Lawry, Alicia Clerks, Tyisha Baxter, Scarlett Wells and Tyra White.

Morwell best - Brodie Palmer, Emily Kerstjens, Shelby Felmingham, Caitlyn Beale, Billie Lappin, Tionni Mifsud.

This Sunday will see all female football being played at Eastern Park, Warragul when the Youth Girls take on Newborough at 11am and the Colts women starting at 1pm against Red Hill.
