Plenty of possibilities in play

SENIORS

The “what ifs” in football, especially when the season gets to crunch time, are well in play in Gippsland League.

On Saturday it was a case of what if Wonthaggi Power had hung on to upset second placed Maffra. If Power had won it would be in the “five”. Maffra would have slipped a game behind the ladder leader Leongatha and with a huge struggle on its hands to finish the home and away season in the coveted top spot.

But Maffra got there, just, by two points – 9-8 to 812.

Morwell, whose hold on the fifth and last spot for the finals, has been shaken by three successive losses gave its all against Leongatha on Saturday.

Leongatha kicked the last goal of the third quarter and the only three in the final term to stay on top with a hard fought 10-14 to 6-7 win.

Traralgon (3rd) won comfortably at home against Drouin but still has Moe breathing down its neck for a double chance.

Moe kicked 12 goals to three in the second half in scoring 22-14 to 11-7 over Bairnsdale.

The Lions bounced back strongly after narrowly avoiding an upset defeat by Drouin in the previous round.

They had 13 goalkickers on Saturday, Ashleigh Dugan heading the list with five.

Sale made it three wins from four when it fought back after being headed in the last quarter to edge out Warragul by 11 points.

The Gulls are still a mathematical chance of finals but will need to lift and have a few “what ifs” fall its way to leap ahead of Morwell and Wonthaggi.

The league has a break next weekend ahead of what is sure to be a hectic final four rounds.
