Industrials overcome fast starting Crows

-

Warragul Industrials overcame a fast start by Longwarry to keep its aspirations of a top two finish well and truly alive.

The 16-9 (105) to 10-8 (68) victory moved the Industrials to third on the ladder, four points behind second-placed Catani but with far superior percentage.

Longwarry came out from the shed fired up, and it reflected on the scoreboard as the Crows made an early charge.

Zach Chaplin won a free kick for holding the ball to set up the first attack for the Crows, only for Ayden Mills to clear for the Industrials.

The visitor countered when John Ikupu turned his opponent inside out to find Tye Holland with a handball, only for the Crows to clear from defence.

Shane Brewster sent the Industrials forward again but couldn’t quite hit the lead of Corey Nickels, with the ball slipping out of bounds before the Crows cleared from a free kick for a push out.

The Industrials attacked again but again couldn’t find reward, with Aaron Serong clearing for the Crows with Brewster unable to hold onto the mark.

The Crows went forward through Rick Salce but it was the repeat entry that got the desired result, with a long goal from Daniel Fry putting the Crows on the board.

Longwarry went forward again from a centre clearance that found Kane Oldham on the lead. He went in search for Fry but he couldn’t quite hold the mark with Ikupu able to clear.

The Crows attacked again but the snap from Chaplin sailed out on the full.

Dom Pullen hit up a lead to set up the Crows second, before a free kick in defence to Jonah Serong and a sliding mark at half back to Chaplin set up the next attack, only for the shot to miss.

An impressive chain of play led to the Industrials’ first major. Ikupu dished off to a running player, who looked for Nickels with Will Jolley taking advantage of the crumbs with a snap from over the back to kick his first of six majors for the afternoon.

A long snap saw the Crows with the immediate reply before stealing possession and going long for another mark and goal to re-establish a handy buffer.

A strong mark set up the next attack with Aaron Serong and Ken Towt handling, but again Fry couldn’t quite hold the mark under pressure.

Stephen Joyce made a forward entry for the Industrials, only for Towt to cut off his kick, before Josh O’Brien got caught in another effort to move the visitor forward.

Daniel Fry marked on the lead and converted the Crows’ fifth major for the term.

Tyson Bale moved the ball forward from a centre square infringement, but the attack was beaten by the siren with the Crows holding a handy buffer.

It would be a sign of what was to come with the Industrials able to more than match the advantage, booting six goals to one to take an eight-point lead at half time.

Will Gibson scored first with a long goal. Cooper Minichiello went long to find Nickels on the lead, but his shot missed.

Another shot drifted across the face and out on the full, before O’Brien won a free kick for holding the ball, only for his shot to also miss.

The Industrials went forward again through Bale, but Jonah Serong was able to clear for the Crows.

The home side went forward at the other end, but again Fry couldn’t quite hold the mark under pressure.

Tye Holland booted a long goal to register the Industrials’ third, before Gibson ran towards goal, only to miss when he was taken as he kicked.

Another long goal put the Industrials in touch, only for the Crows to respond.

Minichiello went long with the Industrials scoring from the ball up to again close the gap.

A long shot missed before the Industrials converted a long goal to put them in front.

Ikupu followed up with a long goal from the break to send the visitor into half time with an eight point lead.

The Industrials were able to maintain the advantage from that point, kicking out to a 37-point lead at the final change.

Ikupu took the advantage from a holding the ball free kick to find Nickells, who marked and converted.

The Crows responded, Riley Rundell taking the advantage from a free kick against his former side to find Fry on the lead out wide, who converted with a clever kick.

Joyce and Brewster handled to set up Jolley for another goal.

Fry’s next shot hit the post with the Industrials responding with a major at the other end, Brewster going long to find Nickels doubling back to take the mark.

A free kick gave Jolley another goal, and he quickly had another on the board courtesy of some good follow up work from Ikupu.

Tye Holland evaded opponents in the middle to find Nickels, who took the mark and converted to open up a handy 37-point buffer at the final change.

The match petered out, with both sides scoring three goals in the final term.

Ben Northover was also a key in defence for the Industrials, while Nathan Fry, Brody Rundell and Ahmet Zijai were also evasive for the Crows.
