Warragul unable to match Sale

-

Warragul netballers showed improvement but couldn’t match Sale on Saturday. A grade: Warragul 48 lost to Sale 57. It was an even first quarter despite Warragul started slowly. Jaime Rollinson took control in the goal circle and brought every other player into the game.

The second quarter was an arm wrestle as both sides fought to gain access to their goalers. It was tough for the mid-court to find space and Sale edged in front by four goals.

Sale started the third quarter well and extended their lead. However, Warragul improved as the quarter progressed. Great defence by Lucy Monahan, Cara McIntosh and Eboni Wall saw Warragul finish this quarter the better of the two sides.

The high standard continued into the final term but Warragul couldn’t bridge the gap.

Awards: Cara McIntosh, Eboni Wall, Lucy Monahan and Jaime Rollinson. B grade: Warragul 36 lost to Sale 46. Keen for redemption after losing a close match to Sale previously, Warragul was competitive in the first quarter to trail by three goals.

The Gulls won the second quarter before Sale’s tall defenders helped take the lead out to eight goals by the last break.

Elly Radford played her first B grade game, fitting into the team with ease and working well with sister Brooke in defence. Olivia Brady played her 100th club game and did an excellent job in goals alongside the accurate Chiara Mulqueen. However, it wasn’t enough to reduce Sale’s lead in the last.

Awards: Chiara Mulqueen, Elly Radford, Cindy Dawson and Brooke Radford. C grade: Warragul 32 lost to Sale 35. Under 17: Warragul 22 lost to Sale 47. Warragul started extremely well against the talented Sale. Elly Radford and Ivy Cant were outstanding in defence and Indya Fries was driving well down the court.

As the game progressed, Sale gradually took control while Warragul began to make some fundamental mistakes and struggled to score.

The final term saw Warragul regroup and again matched Sale on the scoreboard. The defenders created turnovers and there were excellent passages into the goal circle. Awards: Elly Radford and Ivy Cant. Under 15: Warragul 26 lost to Sale 63. The Gulls had a fantastic start with accurate passing, excellent ball movement (especially by Laura Miller), and awesome shooting by Grace Radford and Birdie Mulqueen.

Warragul’s defence was spot on with awesome movement and pressure by Jacinta Bagot and Clare Lear leading to many intercepts and turnovers.

Sale took the win but the Gulls made few mistakes and showed massive improvement.

Awards: Jacinta Bagot, Clare Lear and Laura Miller. Under 13: Warragul 3 lost to Sale 53. The Gulls’ young guns were inspired to improve on their previous game against the strong Sale.

There was amazing movement across the court, having learned new tactics. The defence was relentless. The girls regained a sense of fun and look forward to closing out the season as much improved netballers.
