Take part in survey

-

There will be a whole lot of angry and confused electors out there regarding the same sex marriage issue.

There will be a lot of misinformation that will hit letterboxes soon. Many people believe that marriage laws are held by churches, synagogues etc.

They are in fact held by states and territories. same sex couples were marrying overseas in 2004 and hoping to have their marriage recognised back in Australia.

John Howard merely changed a regulation in the Federal Marriage Act to add that it was a `voluntarily entered-into union of a man and a woman to exclusion of all others'. John Howard’s new regulation overrode state law.

In 2013 when the ACT challenged that, the High Court voted in the Federal Government’s favour. Despite it being a state enacted law, the Federal Government was within its rights to do what it did.

Now we have the farcical situation where we are having a postal survey being conducted for a mere $122 million.

The survey will be non-binding and I wonder whether our local MP Russell Broadbent will take any notice of it.

We don’t know how he voted in the party room but due to party room solidarity he must share some of the blame for the expense. If McMillan electors as a majority vote one particular way, will he just ignore it and vote the other? Does it depend on how the whole nation votes?

We elected him to make decisions on our behalf, not to merely appease some of the more vocal members of his own party.

Everyone should take part in this survey whichever cause they support. At least that way we will find out what credence our local MP puts on the wishes of his electorate.
