Gulls the only chance

-

The Gippsland League final “five” seems settled.

Warragul has an outside chance of pushing its way in, but it’s a very outside chance.

After the weekend’s results, especially Morwell’s strong win against Wonthaggi Power that has ended any chance Power had, the Gulls sits six premiership points adrift of Morwell with two home and away rounds to go.

For Warragul to make the finals Morwell will have to lose both remaining games, and that’s a possibility as it has Traralgon and Moe to come, but the Gulls - needing to win both - have a tough road ahead – Leongatha and Traralgon.

Leongatha and Maffra will finish in first and second, which side ends of top will be more than likely decided when they clash in the final round.

Traralgon, third, is being challenged for that position by Moe and both teams have a couple of tough games to come.

Traralgon has Morwell and Warragul; Moe meets Wonthaggi Power away then Morwell.

At the weekend Moe’s chance of possibly grabbing third spot on the ladder, and a double chance, took a hit when it suffered its second three-point loss for the year against reigning premier Maffra.

Morwell was up to the task against Wonthaggi, in control all game to be strong 13-8 to 5-8 winners.

Traralgon, humbled the previous week by Maffra, bounced back to brush Bairnsdale aside 14-11 to 3-7 and Leongatha, always a tough foe at home, swamped Sale 20-16 to 4-7.

A workmanlike performance by Warragul saw it home by 71 points against neighbour Drouin on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK Despite the “five” looking settled there’s plenty of interest in next weekend’s games.

Warragul, at home, has a “must win” match up against Leongatha.

A loss would put the Gulls out of the running.

Morwell hosts Traralgon in a game that would ensure the Tigers’ finals spot if they win.

Moe has booked its place in the playoffs but Saturday’s trip to Wonthaggi will be a test.

Bairnsdale is at home to Sale and Drouin heads to Maffra.

Games at grounds of first named clubs are:Warragul v. Leongatha. Maffra v. Drouin. Wonthaggi Power v. Moe. Morwell v. Traralgon. Bairnsdale v. Sale.
