Warragul Garden Club’s July meeting was well received by its members.

“That was a great meeting”, was the response of many members that attended the July meeting of the club.

The reason for that response was the enthusiastic presentation of well-known identity and local horticultural judge June Dineen, as she demonstrated the basic principles of flower arranging.

Audience participation was the key to this response. June provided the tools for everyone involved, complemented by flowers and foliage from members’ own gardens.

June’s skills and hands-on enthusiasm resulted in many arrangements being completed.

The president had difficulty in calling “time”, as many were so engrossed in producing their own masterpiece before the day’s judge, Margaret Monk had a difficult task to undertake.

The club thanked June for her efforts. and Margaret had great help from the Shetland Islands Historical Society with their research when they visited there last year.

The Family History Writers’ Circle will meet on Friday at the Warragul Library, Victoria St, between 10am and noon. All welcome. The Society is compiling a family history of service personnel from World War 1 who are buried in the Warragul cemetery. If anyone has any information, contact WGGS at the address below. WGGS Library opening hours: Wednesday to Friday 10am-2pm. Second Saturday of the month 10am-3pm. Fourth Sunday of the month 2pm-4pm. Visitors welcome. Not everything can be found online.

The Society meet on the upper floor of the Old Shire Hall, Queen St, Warragul at 8pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Further details about the Society can be obtained from president Barbara, phone 5611 3871 or visit the website www.westgippslandgenealogy.com.

Margaret’s judging of the month’s show bench resulted in Aileen White taking out ‘flower of the month’ and Carol Burns the ‘best on bench’.

The president reported that the club’s three sponsors from last year will all be sponsoring the club this year and will be joined by a new sponsor.

Spring bus trips are being planned for Mornington Botanic Gardens and Gardenworld, along with one to Melton Native Botanic Gardens and University of Melbourne horticultural campus. Non-members are welcome to join in. The next meeting will be held on August 28 (9.45am at Warragul Senior Citizen’s Centre) and will feature the club’s annual plant sale.

Visitors and potential new members are welcome.
