Tight opening round of finals

It was a tight first round of finals in the Warragul and District Junior Football League, with squads taking every opportunit­y to try and secure a spot in the next round.

As teams clamber to make it to the main event in a few weeks time, the competitio­n becomes increasing­ly tight.

Under 10

First eliminatio­n final In very boggy conditions the Cobras played out a hard-fought game of football against a strong Bunyip side.

The first three quarters were extremely tight first three quarters, the Drouin side were the better team.

The Cobras couldn’t convert and Bunyip made them pay, scoring two goals in the last quarter to seal the win. Second eliminatio­n final The Warragul Blues and Longwarry did battle on the back oval in an eliminatio­n final.

In muddy conditions both teams showed great skills and moved the ball well.

After dominating the first quarter, the Blues finally managed to capitalise with the first goal to go into the break with a handy lead.

In an evenly contested game throughout, the Blues gradually got on top to run out six goal winners against a very competitiv­e Longwarry side.

This is the first Longwarry junior side to make it to the finals. Qualifying final It was a very intense high-level game between Warranor and the Jets on a wet and muddy oval at Yarragon.

By three quarter time Warranor had kicked two goals until the Jets fought back hard in the last quarter where they scored their only goal.

Through attacking pressure, the Jets kept Warranor scoreless.

The Jets finished the match with the ball right in front of their goal but couldn't convert to get the win.

Under 12

First eliminatio­n final It was the battle of the difference all day with the only goal coming from Ben Greenall.

This early score was just enough to get them over the line and claim the win. Second eliminatio­n final In the first half Bunyip started well, locking the ball within their forward fifty.

The Bulldogs did well to consistent­ly win the ball in the centre and shut down Ellinbank in the second half to take the win.

It was a fantastic four quarter effort by all players, especially to Bunyip registerin­g a great win against a gallant and determined Ellinbank side. Qualifying final The Blues got off to a quick start to take a four-goal lead into quarter time.

The Jets fought back in the second quarter, but the Blues continued to use the ball well and kept the scoreboard ticking over to record a good win.

Under 14

First eliminatio­n final The Cobras were down on their regular team players, but came out fighting strong in the first quarter.

Ellinbank were dominant in the second quarter placing themselves in a good leading position.

Although the Cobras Ellinbank took the win. Second eliminatio­n final The first quarter was a tug of war with both sides settling.

Warranor was pushing hard in the second and was rewarded with two early goals.

Bunyip fought back hard and took the lead to start getting their game going.

Bunyip ran out the game well and recorded a great victory. Nick Roberts celebrated 75 games. Qualifying final Conditions were good to kick off the top of the table clash.

Garfield got off to a great start getting two goals on the board.

A hard fought game from there on with the Blues managing to get scores on the board.

A fantastic game by both sides with the Blues getting a late goal and taking the game. contested

Semi finals will be played at Garfield on Saturday. Draw: Under 10s: Semi final 1: 8.30am Drouin Jets v Bunyip. Semi final 2: 9.30am Warranor v Warragul Blues. Under 12s: Semi final 1: 10.30am Drouin Jets v Garfield. Semi final 2: 11.30am Warragul Blues v Bunyip. Under 14s: Semi final 1: 12.45pm Garfield v Ellinbank. Semi final 2: 2pm Warragul Blues v Bunyip.
