Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Heavy conditions take its toll

-

Drouin’s State League teams had a bye at the weekend, while the Gippsland Soccer League teams played at home against Leongatha.

Drouin had heavy rain overnight which didn’t help the pitch conditions.

By the time three games had been played on pitch three, the ground had become unplayable and thus resulting in the senior men’s match having to be called off. Senior Women Full-time Score: Drouin 0 – Leongatha 5 Drouin had a fun game against Leongatha. The Drouin women played the most fantastic game. The score certainly didn’t reflect the efforts made by all players.

With Bec Brown playing keeper again this week, she made an outstanding effort. Bec gave it her absolute best.

The back line kept up the defence well with Kate keeping them all in line and slogging her guts out, which saw her take out best on ground for the day.

With the midfield working hard to support the back and the forwards, they ran their guts out.

With some beautiful plays out on the wings made by the girls, it was just unfortunate that Drouin couldn’t convert their opportunities into the back of the net.

With laughs on and off the pitch it was great to see the women have fun.

Best on ground: Kate Boyer; Awards: Bec Brown, Mackenzie Warren, Liz Beard. Under 12 Full time Score: Drouin 1 Leongatha 0 Drouin under 12s had a tough game against second placed Leongatha on Sunday.

It was a very even game from the beginning and some brilliant defending by Kieren, Sam, Rinnan, Freya and Holly limited Leongatha’s chances at goal.

Goal keeper Liam gave a match winning performance, saving many scoring opportunities by Leongatha.

Tristan had some beautiful runs down the wings which resulted in the only goal for the game blasted in by Daniel.

It was a fantastic win for Drouin under 12s and a solid effort from start to finish. Player awards: Best on ground: Liam; Coaches award: Sam. Goal scorer: Daniel. Under 10 The under 10s had a long-awaited rematch with Leongatha and put up a much better performance at home.

However more work is needed on getting the ball from defence into attack.

High points were great tackling from the defensive trio of Lucia, Isobel and Hugo.

Tom and Harvey excelled in midfield and two goals from Darcy, however Leongatha had the upper hand throughout the game.

The club thanked Wil Blackburn for refereeing this season.

Next week sees the final game of the season against Korumburra, and it will be interesting to see how they carry the lessons from the weekend’s match forward.

DDSC committee coaches award: Tom, for his relentless, determined midfield work.

Encouragement award: Isobel for great defensive work. Under 8 After a night of heavy rain, the under eights enjoyed the soggy, muddy conditions.

The last home game for the season saw Drouin play Leongatha, and it was a tough one for the Dragons.

Positives out of the game were excellent passing from player to player. Tackling was good, along with dribbling in the wet conditions.

The team also saw a few breakaways, which was exciting.

Tyler, in only his third game, did an awesome job as goalkeeper in the first half.

James took over in the second half and also did a wonderful job.

Awards went to Remi Butler and Harlan Thomson.
