Dragons set to host grand final

-

Drouin Dragons under 16s and under 15 girls travelled to Korumburra on Sunday to play for a place in the Gippsland Soccer league grand final.

Both teams fought against some quality opposition but couldn’t come away with the win.

The under 16s drew two-all at the end of the game, which then went into extra time.

Unfortunately for Drouin, Inverloch scored from a long kick that sailed over the head of the Dragons goalkeeper to take the win three to two.

The under 15 girls fought strongly against Mirboo North who have quite a few Gippsland representatives playing for them. However, the girls ended up going down by a couple of goals.

The under 15 girls were nervous as they took the field.

They quickly got on the ball however, with Lilly Carrison and Sasha Geerlings working together to score the first goal.

This lifted the team and they continued to put pressure on the Mirboo defence.

Imogen Cooper made a few saves in the next 15 minutes as Mirboo started to find their feet.

Sylvia, Hayley, Zoe and Olivia worked hard in defence, but came unstuck as Mirboo scored their first goal late in the first half.

Miriama Cooper, Violette Thomas and Charlotte Brown worked well together, utilising space on the wing to run the ball down towards goals.

Although the Mirboo keeper was fumbling, the girls were unable to score another.

More relaxed in the second half, the girls came out strong, but were unable to keep up with the fast-paced Mirboo team.

Thalia Mitchell worked hard both on the wing and in the centre to stop the attack, but was unable to chase down all the players.

Overall it was a brilliant game by all – with no clear best player as all the girls pushed themselves to their limits in what was the best game of the season.

The Dragons scored a goal to Sasha Geerlings with a brilliant assist from Lilly Carrison.

This Sunday, Drouin Dragons are hosting the Gippsland Soccer League grand final with face painting, jumping pillow, trade tent and a classic car show and shine.

Full canteen and bar facilities will be operating during the day.
