Program for young veterans

-

A program focussed on the fitness, health and mateship of “young veterans” of war service and peacekeeping operations is being developed by Warragul RSL.

An information session to which those that have completed service with the navy, army or air force since 1985 will be held at the Warragul RSL clubrooms in Albert St on Thursday night starting at 6.30pm.

“Young veterans”, their husbands, wives and partners are welcome to attend.

Ben Vahland of Drouin, a former leading seaman marine technician with the Royal Australian Navy, was thrilled when he learned of the initiative.

The Warragul RSL, in conjunction with Voyage Fitness, will run a 10-week program at minimal or no cost to participants.

Mr Vahland, whose six years’ service included operations in East Timor, said it was a “fantastic idea”.

He has been trying to organise a support group for young veterans through Drouin RSL.

Mr Vahland believes there are quite a few younger former servicemen and women living in the area but many were reluctant to be involved with RSL sub-branches, possibly because of age differences with those from the Vietnam and earlier conflicts.

He said the fitness program would be a great way for them to develop friendships with others in their age groups and, importantly, to boost their health.

Positive physical health relates to positive mental health, Mr Vahland said.

Further details about the information evening and program are available from Warragul RSL’s president Noel Tucker on 5623 6003, secretary Brian Hastings at 5623 1280 or by email to rslwgl@dcsi.net.au
