BUNYIP, GARFIELD WIN IN JUNIORS

-

arfield and Bunyip football clubs didn’t end their first seasons in the new West Gippsland competition empty handed.

Garfield collected the thirds premiership cup on Saturday after Bunyip had earlier won the fourths.

But there were nail-biting times for their supporters with both low-scoring games decided by only a few points.

In the fourths, Bunyip almost kicked the title away scoring 2-9 to Phillip Island’s 3-0 for a three-point win. The game was close all day. Bunyip was in front by two points at quarter time and by five at the halfway mark, then level 2-6 to 3-0 at the final change.

It managed only three behinds in the last term but they were enough against an Island side that couldn’t add to its score.

Bunyip’s best were Xavier Kinder, Dylan Gallasch, William Papley, Zachery Bonnet, Brodie Stokes and Wade Gray.

The goals were kicked by Will Gown and Liam Murphy.

Garfield overcame a better start by Cora Lynn in the thirds’ grand final to scrape home 3-5 to 3-1.

Cora Lynn opened with two first quarter goals against Garfield’s two behinds.

By half time the Stars had edged ahead 22 to 2-0 and went into the final quarter with a seven-point lead, 3-2 to 2-1.

However, they couldn’t find the tall sticks in the last term – they added three points – but it was enough to hold off Cora Lynn that kicked its only goal since quarter time.

Garfield’s Damion Denysenko capped off a great final series by him to be named his side’s best.

Jonty Bow, Max Dyball, Joel Batson and Zane Harper also stood out in a good team performance.

Brett Coffey kicked two of the three goals and Joseph Vegley the other.

For Cora Lynn its best were Toby Hogan, Lachlan Miceli, Levi Munns, Tim Weller, Joshua Arena and James Mackenzie.

Chase Blackwood kicked two goals and Mackenzie one.
