Seniors’ events

-

There is plenty going on in Baw Baw shire this month as part of Victoria’s Seniors Festival.

But if that’s not enough seniors can travel for free on public transport throughout the state from next Sunday until October 15.

The free travel available to senior cards holders will open up access for many people to events elsewhere as well as give an opportunity to visit family and friends in other parts of Victoria.

Victorian Seniors Festival programs are available from public libraries, council offices, neighbourhood houses and Coles stores.

A booklet detailing events in Baw Baw shire can be downloaded from the shire’s website.

Mayor Joe Gauci encouraged all local seniors to join in regardless of their background, experience or mobility. There’s something for everyone, he said. “The variety of events extends from fitness to films and concerts to croquet”.

Cr Gauci pointed out that many of the activities and events require bookings and details of what they are and how to book are contained in the program for the shire.

Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley said the theme for this year’s 35th Senior Festival was “You’re welcome”.

It is a chance for seniors to learn new skills and make new friends in their communities, he said.

Mr Foley said 15 per cent of the State’s population are seniors and the festival celebrates the “remarkable contribution” they make across the State.

He pointed out that 40 per cent of people aged between 65 and 74 do some form of voluntary work in the community.
