Heather leads Drouin to win

The pen­nant team of Drouin Cro­quet Club trav­elled to Won­thaggi last Tues­day to play round five in the Gipp­s­land Cro­quet Com­pe­ti­tion.

Con­di­tions were con­sid­er­ably bet­ter, ex­cept for a keen wind. How­ever, the Won­thaggi greens were dry and run­ning quickly.

The open­ing round of the sin­gles saw Heather Bullen (Drouin, hand­i­cap 5) again hav­ing to step up into the num­ber one po­si­tion. She found the go­ing tough, go­ing down 2/7 against Mike Kelly (Won­thaggi, hand­i­cap 4), who made good use of his knowl­edge of the game and well thought out tac­tics.

Both Nanette and Michael Fry (Drouin, hand­i­cap 9 and 11) won their first sin­gles 7/5 and 7/5 against Won­thaggi’s Vir­ginia Wheeler (hand­i­cap 8) and Ray Ogle (hand­i­cap 10).

Vicky Rodgers (Drouin, hand­i­cap 11) went down 7/6 in a closely con­tested game against Sue Cartwright (Won­thaggi, hand­i­cap 9).

The next round of sin­gles saw Drouin take three out of four, to give the club a two-game lead over­all.

Fi­nal score: Drouin 8 games, 83 hoops de­feated Won­thaggi 6 games, 80 hoops.

Well done to Vicky Rodgers in win­ning three of her five games, with a +5 re­sult on the day.

Drouin has the bye to­day and again next week due to Ko­rum­burra’s with­drawal from the com­pe­ti­tion.

The Drouin Cro­quet Club will be open for any­one in­ter­ested to “come and try cro­quet” dur­ing Se­niors Week from Thurs­day, Oc­to­ber 5 to Thurs­day, Oc­to­ber 12 from 10am.
