$1 million for roadworks

-

Almost $1 million will be spent to repair major pavement failures on six Baw Baw Shire roads.

Trafalgar based Fowlers Asphalting won the tender to undertake council’s major pavement repairs.

The $952,541 contract is for the repair of failed road pavements at 27 locations on six roads.

The roads include Bona Vista Rd, Bona Vista; Childers Thorpdale Rd between Thorpdale and Childers; Coalville Rd, Coalville; Invermay Rd West, Athlone; Nayook Powelltown Rd, Nayook and Sheffield Rd, Neerim South.

Council received five tenders for the contract.

Officers said there would be a $12,000 budget surplus on the contract which could be used for any unexpected conditions.

The report said the pavement repair works would result in a decrease in routine maintenance and demand.

Cr Peter Kostos said these works were required for safe travel and it was good to see a local company win the tender.

Cr Darren Wallace said the shire had a large road network which required money to be spent on it.

“These roads are having a midlife crisis and need a facelift. I am sure anyone who lives and travels on these roads daily will appreciate the works,” he said.

Cr Wallace said it was great this contract was being given to a local company which also assisted with employment.
