Open garden highlight for spring meeting

-

Members of the Warragul and District Garden Club recently met at the home of members Heather and Rob Coustley.

About 40 members attended at the attractive property.

In the large garage we watched slides and video, taken in just the previous few days, of the Towoomba Flower Festival, by Irene Rolfe on her way home from a northern winter vacation.

The festival in spring is spectacular and one wonders at the task of planting the huge number of flowering annuals that provide such an awesome display.

The weather threatened to spoil the morning but fortunately the showers cleared sufficiently for us all to enjoy the garden, which has been completed in the last three years.

This was followed with tea, coffee and lots of food, after which no one seemed to be in a hurry to leave that lovely relaxing atmosphere.

The usual monthly competition was held and to no one’s surprise the “best exhibit” and “flower of the month” was won by host Heather Coustley with a beautiful rhododendron from her garden. The members thanked Heather and Rob for hosting the meeting.

The next meeting on October 23 will also be “off-site” as the club has accepted an invitation from one of its sponsors and will hold its meeting at Drouin Home Timber and Hardware.

After benching the month’s competition exhibits, including the annual iris competition, members will be visiting two local Drouin residential gardens.

They will then return to the store for lunch. Non members are welcome to attend.

The club has two interesting bus trips planned in the near future. On October 19 the club will be visiting the Melton Native Botanic Garden, stopping off at the Almeda Clematis Nursery on the way home.

On November 20 there will be a trip to Mornington Botanic Rose Gardens and after lunch a visit to Gardenworld at Springvale.

Non-members are welcome to join in as there are still seats available on both buses. The cost is a very reasonable $35 per person. To book please ring Howard on 0449 619 990 or Email to hasjds@gmail.com.
