No close margins for Garfield

There were no close margins for Garfield bowlers as they started the new WGBD pennant season on Saturday with a 97-shot win and two losses. Division two: Garfield defeated Moe 147/50. Tom Cleary’s team flew the boxes to lead 14/2 on the ninth. They were still going strong at the break, 17/5, before picking up 16 shots in five ends to be 33/7 on the 19th. Although Moe tried hard and got a few ends late in game, Garfield were a much stronger team on the day and had a great 36/13 win.

John Majkut’s team lost the first but got a five on the second. They only lost two singles from there to lead 19/3 at the break. Moe tried to come back, getting five ends. However, they were mainly singles and Garfield came home strong with 13 shots in the last six ends to win 33/10.

Steve Whyte’s team got away to a great start, up 14/0 on the sixth. They only three ends from there to lead 24/5 at the break. The game was tighter after afternoon tea with both teams getting six ends each. Garfield went on to win 34/15.

Steve Bassed’s team got away well, up 7/0 on the second. They only lost four ends three being singles - heading into the break. They led 26/8. Garfield kept going for a great 44/12 win.

Well done to all the Garfield teams with a special mention to John Majkut who played his first pennant game for Garfield and did a great job as skip. Results: Tom Cleary (skip), Shane Oliver, Rod Hackett and Frank Prins won 36/13. John Majkut (skip), Alan White, Jack Lee and Adrian Helmuth won 33/10. Steve Whyte (skip), Peter Lieshout, Joe Lenders and Gary Helemore won 34/15. Steve Bassed (skip), Gary Payne, Ray Biffin and Stu Gemmill won 44/12.

Division five: Garfield (2) lost to Morwell Club (2) 55/87.

Charlie Borg’s team was slow away, trailing 3/13 on the ninth. However, they picked up eight shots over the next five ends to be three-shots down at the break. The game changed after the stoppage, Garfield coming home strongly to win all but four ends. The final score was 24/20 to give Charlie Borg a win in his first pennant game for Garfield. He did a great job as skip.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team won the first but Morwell Club came back, winning eight ends to Garfield’s five. Garfield trailed 9/25 at the break. The teams won six ends apiece after the break but Garfield lost to a stronger team on the day 20/40.

Wes Goodman’s team lost the first two ends before recovering to be one-shot down on the fifth. Morwell Club came again to be up 8/6 on the 11th. Garfield still trailed at the break. Although the tried hard, Garfield was unable to catch Morwell Club who bowled well all day. Garfield lost 11/27. Results: Charlie Borg (skip), Graeme Burton, Cliff Stephens and Phil Humphreys won 24/20. Judy Pocklingto­n (skip), Malcolm Newman, Jim Boucher and Lex Taylor lost to H. McCurley’s team 20/40. Wes Goodman, Bob Lamport, Don Knight and Damian Brick lost to A. Ralls’ team 11/27.

Division six: Garfield (3) lost to Drouin (4) 34/61.

Jill Rouse’s team lost the first two ends before winning the next two but still trailed 2/6. Joe Deane put some good bowls in as lead but Garfield was unable to hold them most times. However, Drouin’s Jim Hogan led well all day and was hard to stop. Garfield were down 8/21 at the break but kept trying. They lost 12/35.

Maureen Lamport’s team lost the first two ends. They fought back to level twice before taking the lead on the seventh. Garfield had two bad ends allowing Drouin to take the lead on the 10th. After being tied 14/14 on the 15th, the teams went end for end with scores levelled four times including 22/22 on the 24th. However, Garfield lost a four on the last end to lose 22/26. It was a hard fought game with both teams winning six ends after the break. Results: Jill Rouse (skip), Isabel Deane, Bev Sainsbery and Joe Deane lost to John Kinrade’s team 12/35. Maureen Lamport (skip), Jan Johnson, Pat Marriott and Keith Sainsbery lost to Dini Hone’s team 22/26.

In midweek pennant, Garfield sits top of the ladder after its second win on Tuesday. Division three: Garfield defeated Morwell (2) 84/51.
