Spring continues to deliver good rainfall

-

Good spring rains continued in the Warragul district last month.

The 104.2 millimetres of rain recorded was almost spot on the 115-year average and followed 144.6 millimetres in September which was 30 millimetres above the average for that month.

For farmers the silage season is in full swing while in the towns mowers are getting plenty of use as some warmer weather has lawns springing to life.

The past two months’ falls came after drier than normal conditions for the year up until the end of August.

The October rain was spread across the month.

There were five days of falls in the double figures, 13.8 millimetres on October 28 the highest, and lighter falls on another 12 days.

Five days, from October 15 to 19, was the longest stretch without rain.

The next two months will have to be considerably wetter than average if Warragul is to top the 1000-millimetre mark and annual average fall of 1011.5.

The year’s total to the end of last month was 723.8 millimetres, down 114 millimetres on the average for the past 115 years, and 288 short of the annual average.

Warragul averages only 169.1 millimetres of rain in November and December, but has fallen short of that in each of the past five years.
