Geoff Watt run a family affair

-

The Geoff Watt Memorial Fun Run had another distinct family flavour to it, with siblings Peter Cutler and Emily Barkley taking out the half marathon events.

A local dairy farmer from Buln Buln, Peter has now won the Geoff Watt half marathon five times. He event returned home to milk his cows after completing the hilly course.

Pete’s sister Emilie Barkley has also tasted multiple success in the half marathon, taking out his year’s event to go back-to-back following a second-placed finish in 2015.

With a new course for this year’s event, both set course records. This year’s course set off from Tarwin St, along Pharoahs Rd to the top of the golf course and Dollarburn Rd.

Davern White and Simone Forbes were the half marathon winners in the master’s category.

Kevin Wilton was fastest in the 10km event, finishing ahead of guest competitor Tristan Miller who is renowned for completing 52 marathons in 52 weeks.

Along with many local athletes supporting the event, athletes also travelled significant distances to take part.

Sarah Lewis of Leongatha was the first woman across the line in the 10km, with Trish Yates and Georgia Oliver taking the master’s and under 18 categories respectively.

It was also a family affair in the men’s 5km event, with under 18 athlete Renn Coghlan finishing not far ahead of Peter Coghlan, who took out the master’s category.

Under 18 athlete Lilly Leighton took out the women’s 5km open ahead of Gill and Kate Tucker in a tight finish, with Fiona Griffin the first master’s athlete across the line ahead of guest athlete Lavinia Petrie.

Lavinia, 74, won five gold medals from five events at the 2015 world master’s athletics championships in France.

Juniors raced with enthusiasm in the 2.5km event with Jacob Langelaan, Luke Berry, Harriet Yates and Tahlia Langelaan the first across the line in their respective categories.
