Marsha lands job after overcoming fears at local TAFE
Like many women, Marsha Adams was facing the prospect of having to step back into the workforce after time off to raise her young family.
It had been almost 20 years since she had picked up a textbook but she knew she had to take the plunge to chase her dreams and support her family.
Marsha had always been interested in working in health care and after researching what was courses were available, she enrolled herself in the Diploma of Nursing with Federation Training after researching it online.
She knew that nursing would provide her many opportunities to work in a variety of areas in the health industry and ultimately, the way the course is structured appealed mostly to her.
“As a mother, knowing when classes and placements were meant I could plan babysitting and other challenges that come with small children in advance”, says Marsha.
Although classroom time is important, the course consists of a lot of practical sessions in the lab which means students are able to practice and learn new skills with real equipment and mannequins.
“This makes the course much more interesting and keeps everyone engaged.”
“I personally learn much better with practical experiences and having the opportunity to work in a local aged care facility and hospitals under the supervision of trained educators was invaluable”, says Marsha.
On-the-job learning means students are well supported and encouraged to apply all the things they’ve learnt in class to a real-life setting, so once they hit the workforce upon completion of their qualification, they feel like they are fully prepared.
Marsha has since secured a position working in an aged care facility as a Personal Care Assistant. She hopes to progress into a role of Enrolled Nurse once she’s fully qualified, but ultimately, she is just excited to be working in the field which she studied.
A recent study has shown that Vocational Education and Training (VET) graduates in Australia have a higher employment rate than those graduating from University (McCrindle, 2017), with more than 78% of VET graduates being employed upon completion of their training.
This strengthens the message that TAFE education can deliver great outcomes for students looking for a rewarding career without having to go to University.
Federation Training are now taking applications for study in 2018.
