Swans scrape home in Squash

-

Round three of Baw Baw Squash Club’s Tuesday night competition saw the Swans just scrape home against the Eagles, and the Vultures had a convincing win over the Crows.

The Hawks retain their position at the top of the ladder while the Crows have yet to record a win.

Chris Cameron was the only player to record a straight-sets win in this round.

The hard-fought battle for supremacy on court two provided interest for spectators.

In the first match higher-ranked Steve Mooney, 9/4 7/9 9/2 9/6, managed to hold off a determined effort from Lynton McPhail who is rapidly returning to form after a recent illness.

The second match was an enthralling contest between the contrasting styles of Björn Hestdal and Oscar Braaksma. Björn’s lobs and anticipation got him off to a good start, winning the first two games, but the power of Oscar and greater variety of strokes saw him overcome the deficit to win 3/9 7/9 9/5 9/6 9/4. The final match was another epic battle. Newcomer Brian Goodwin, who has not played for a long time, shot out of the blocks with his power hitting to a good length. He won the first two games but Peter Young gradually clawed his way into the match and with fine drop shots and controlled aggression eventually prevailed in five games 6/9 9/10 9/6 9/3 9/1.

The club welcomes Brian who will undoubtedly improve with greater match practice. For his efforts, Peter won the award for player of the round.

Players are reminded that there is no competition today.

Order of play for round four next week is three, two, one. If you are a number three please be ready to play at 7.30pm, or phone if you will be unavoidably delayed.
