Garfield gain two big wins

Garfield bowlers had two wins and one loss in WGBD on Saturday.

Division two: Garfield lost to Moe 83/110.

Division five: Garfield (2) defeated Morwell (3) 67/65.

Les Pumphrey’s team got away to a good start, winning the first four ends to be up 6/0. Morwell fought back to level at 10/10 on the ninth. Both teams won two ends each to head into the tea break with scores locked 15/15. Garfield won two ends to Morwell’s one to be up 20/16 on the 16th before Morwell won the next four ends to be up 24/20 on the 20th. Morwell was still up 29/22 on the 24th before winning 29/28. Although Garfield lost, the six on the last end of the day helped Garfield to the overall victory.

Wes Goodman’s team won the first two ends before Morwell won the next five to lead 7/2 on the seventh. Garfield won the next five to be up 10/8 at the break. When play resumed, they lost the first ends to trail by two shots. However, they only lost three singles from there to record a good win, 21/15.

Helene Newton’s team was down early but limited the damage to only singles, trailing 1/5 on the sixth. Morwell picked up four ends to Garfield’s three to be 11/6 at the break. Morwell still led 14/7 on the 17th but Garfield got a seven on the 18th level at 14/14. The scores were tied twice more, including 18/18 on the 24th. Garfield held shots on the last but kitty moved to put Garfield down by three. Skip Helene was out of luck as her bowl just missed the kitty to see Garfield lose 18/21. Results: Les Pumphrey (skip), Graeme Burton, Ron Saunders and Alan Wilson lost to D. Bailey’s team 28/29. Wes Goodman (skip), Don Knight, Malcolm Newham and Cliff Stephens won 21/15. Helene Newton (skip), Ken Newton, Jim Boucher and Colin Mills lost to L. Edge’s team 18/21.

Division six: Garfield (3) defeated Trafalgar (3) 57/42.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team was up 6/1 on the third and 10/4 on the seventh. However, the Trafalgar team picked up their game and levelled 10/10 on the 10th. Scores were level again on the 12th before Trafalgar took the lead on the 13th. They went into the break leading 15/12. The game remained tight when play resumed, both teams getting four ends each. Garfield’s were mostly singles and they trailed 17/23 on the 21st. Both teams got shots late and, although Garfield had shots many times, they were unable to hold them. Trafalgar proved the stronger team and won 26/18.

Damian Brick’s team won the first but lost the next three to be down 3/8 on the fourth. They only lost two ends before the break as Phil Humphreys and Bev Sainsbery put in some good bowls to start off. Garfield led 20/10. Garfield lost the first two ends after the tea break but still led 20/13 on the 15th. They lost only three shots from that point as all the team played good shots. Trafalgar tried hard but Garfield won 39/16. Results: Judy Pocklingto­n (skip), Jan Johnson, Joe Deane and Keith Sainsbery lost to G. Burt’s team 18/26. Damian Brick (skip), Maureen Lamport, Bev Sainsbery and Phil Humphreys won 39/16.
