Batson to lead Gippsland under 21s

- By Liam Durkin

Western Park’s Sam Batson has been named as captain of the Gippsland under 21 side, which will also feature Hallora pair James Williams and Sam Whibley, as well as Buln Buln’s Jack Armour who has gained selection for the third successive time.

Batson has been the association’s brightest young prospect in many years, with the allrounder not only captaining his home club but also the Warragul District Cricket Association Gippsland Cricket League and Country Week team.

Batson has a diverse range of bowlers at his disposal to throw the ball to, and will be sure to call upon left arm quick Sam Whibley to tear threw opposing top orders.

Whibley is back at Hallora this season, after trying his hand in the premier league last year where he played as high as second grade.

His Hallora team mate James Williams is making his debut for the under 21s and has shown promise in the GCL season so far, as he continues to develop his off-spinning craft.

Both bowlers will feel confident with Jack Armour behind the stumps, and the young opening bat who approaches the game with a ‘watch and wait’ mentality will be keen to see off the new ball and bat for as long as possible.

The under 21s first game is this Sunday against Warrnambool at the Merv Hughes Oval in Footscray.
