Longwarry win in great contests

Narrow away wins were the order of the day for Longwarry teams on a beautiful day for lawn bowls on Saturday.

Longwarry’s division three team travelled to Boolarra for an 18-shot win whilst division six had a four-shot win at Thorpdale.

Division three: Longwarry 19/96 defeated Boolarra 1/78.

Elio Meggetto, Judy Eastwell, Kenneth Towt and Barry White (skip) defeated R. Allen’s team 23/16.

Longwarry went into the break one shot up and came out after tea playing some great team bowls. They recorded a comfortabl­e seven-shot win.

Glenn Pask, Brian Hennessy, Lloyd Maisey and Slim Eastwell (skip) defeated R. Peter’s team 27/18.

Longwarry played good bowls and took a commanding 13-shot lead into the break. With Bluey leading well and Slim finishing off the boy’s good work, Longwarry recorded a well-deserved nine-shot win.

Eric Peterson, Grant Pask, Ian Peterson and Russell White (skip) drew T. Parker’s team 24/24.

In an even game, Boolarra won six of the last nine ends to stand five shots up heading into the last end. Longwarry managed to get five on the last to tie the game. Longwarry were well served by the Peterson brothers.

Simon Counsel, Mark Serong, Gerry Hogglett and Ken White (skip) defeated S. Williams’ team 22/20.

Longwarry went into the main break with a commanding 10-shot lead. When play resumed, Boolarra won eight of the next nine ends to lead by two shots with three ends to play. Longwarry, with Ken White taking charge as skip, won the last three ends to record a two-shot win in a great game.

Division six: Longwarry (2) 8/43 defeated Thorpdale (2) 3/39.

Reg Dunn, Edie Bluck, Fred Pitcher and Brian Mason (skip) defeated D. Eaves’ team 23/18.

Longwarry was in control of the game, leading 21/9 on end 19. Thorpdale finished off well but Longwarry’s good start saw them win by five shots.

Sharon Twite, Peter Smethurst, John Watts and Gerry Wakefield (skip) lost to R. Pethybridg­e’s team 20/21.

Longwarry had a six-shot lead at the break. However, Thorpdale fought back to tie the scores on end 18. The game went down to the wire with Thorpdale getting home by one shot in a great contest.
