Garfield show fight against Yallourn

Garfield bowlers took part in a great division two contest in division two whilst division five and six scored comfortabl­e wins.

Division two was home to Yallourn with two wins and two losses to record an overall 11-shot loss. Division five was away at Traralgon RSL with two wins and a draw for an overall 18-shot win. Division six was away to Yallourn with two wins for an impressive overall 31-shot win.

Division two: Garfield lost to Yallourn (2) 84/95.

Steve Whyte’s team was tied 3/3 on the fourth before Yallourn slowly drew away to be 10/6 on the 10th. Garfield got three shots on the 11th but still trailed at the break. Garfield won four ends when play resumed to lead 17/12 on the 17th. Despite Yallourn getting a few shots, Garfield went on for a strong win 27/17.

Les Pumphrey’s team had a slow start, down 1/7 on the fifth. Garfield won four of the next six ends but still trailed 7/10 on the 11th. Although Garfield tried hard and won 11 ends to Yallourn’s 14, they got mostly singles and lost to a stronger team 15/28.

Tom Cleary’s team was in a hard fought game early, with scores tied four times. Garfield got a four on the 12th to lead 10/6 before Yallourn fought back to be up 13/10 on the 15th. Yallourn was still up 15/14 on 18th before Garfield fought back to snatch the win 22/21. Well done to all.

John Majkut’s team started slowly, down 5/7 on the seventh. Garfield won four ends to two but still trailed 11/13 on the 13th. They won the first four ends after the break to lead 19/13 on the 17th before Yallourn started to work the green out. Garfield trailed 19/20 on the 20th and lost four of the next five to lose 20/29. Results: Steve Whyte (skip), Peter Lieshout, Joe Lenders and Gary Helemore won 27/17. Les Pumphrey (skip), Gary Payne, Ray Biffin and Rod Hackett lost 15/28. Tom Cleary (skip), Shane Oliver, Rod James and Frank Prins won 22/21. John Majkut (skip), Alan White, Jack Lee and Adrian Helmuth lost 20/29.

Division five: Garfield (2) defeated Traralgon RSL (3) 74/56.

Bob Lamport’s team lost the first two ends but won nine of next 10 to lead 18/3 at the break. Although both teams won six ends each when play resumed, RSL lost to a stronger team. Well done Garfield on a 31/17 win.

Helene Newton’s team started slowly, down 2/9 on the sixth. Garfield won four of the next six to be three-shots down at the break. Garfield won the first two ends to be up 13/11 on the 14th but RSL won seven of the next eight to see Garfield trail again 14/18. However, Garfield won the last three ends to get up and win 23/19 in a hard fought game with one team getting away to a flying start and the other coming home strongly.

Gordon Moxey’s team had a great start, keeping RSL scoreless in the first eight ends. They were still going strong on the 12th, up 12/4. However, Garfield had one bad end and went into the break up 12/11. It was a good battle when play re-started, scores level on the 19th and 21st. Garfield got three singles to lead 20/17 but RSL got a three on the 24th to salvage a draw 20/20. Well done to both teams. Results: Bob Lamport (skip), Don Knight, Malcolm Newham and Jill Rouse won 31/17. Helene Newton (skip), Ken Newton, Jim Boucher and Phil Humphreys won 23/19. Gordon Moxey (skip), Graeme Burton, Ron Saunders and Colin Mills drew 20/20.

Division six: Garfield (3) defeated Yallourn (5) 62/31.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team lost the first end but won the next three to be up 8/2 on the fourth. Yallourn won the next three to level at 8/8. Garfield regained control to lose only one end before the break to lead 13/9. Garfield kept going and, although Yallourn tried hard and had some shots at times, outplayed their opponents. Garfield, who lost only three ends from the ninth, won 14/38.

Damian Brick’s team got away to a flying start, winning the first seven ends to be up 9/0. They were still leading 13/5 at the break. Garfield led 14/8 on the 13th before both teams won six ends each. Yallourn could claw back Garfield who won 24/17 in a good game by both teams.
